Managing People @ Stanford Program

The Managing People @ Stanford program is designed for staff who manage other staff. Come together with others who manage people from across the university to discuss your critically important role, learn about and apply Stanford's culture and management philosophy to your work, and gain information, tools, and guidance on what you need to know and do to successfully manage people at Stanford.

  • NOTE: For Management Essentials, parts 1 through 4, we recommend you attend sessions sequentially, but it is not mandatory to do so.

Managing People @ Stanford, Part 1: Setting Goals and Assigning Tasks - April 3rd or April 17th

Gain proficiency in setting goals that are understandable and achievable, and in making task assignments that both align with the goals and provide developmental opportunities for your staff. In this session, you will:

  • Associate the employment environment with proper management processes
  • Identify Stanford's performance communication model, specifically, the best practices for setting performance objectives
  • Create SMART goals
  • Practice communicating department and performance objectives to employees

Planning and carrying out constructive performance feedback conversations is one of the most important and frequently used management skills. Your ability and confidence in this area has the potential to build trust and respect, as well as positively impact the contributions your employees make. In this session you will:

  • Associate the Stanford performance communication model with the employee environment
  • Relate the best practices of providing performance feedback to your management responsibilities
  • Identify the Management Essentials' model for feedback, using it to formulate your feedback communication
  • Develop performance feedback communication plans
  • Practice providing performance feedback

Developing employees is central to managing people at Stanford. Whether improving technical knowledge, interpersonal skills or work habits, managers often rely heavily on directive approaches to help employees improve their performance on the job. This course offers supervisors and managers the opportunity to build coaching skills and apply them using real work scenarios. The morning introduces concepts, techniques, and the value of coaching as a key way to develop employee talent and performance. The afternoon is a practice lab, where participants practice their coaching skills with each other.

Your role as a manager frequently means you need to focus your attention to activities that will support getting things done and building strong relationships across the team. 

In this session, you will:

  • Associate team dynamics with current stage of development
  • Identify steps to improve your team's effectiveness
  • Integrate strategy and goals with your mission, vision and values

Learning strategies to manage your own manager is useful to any employee, particularly those in manager position. Explore the key strategies and approaches to develop the work relationship between you and your boss or other organizational leaders. Among these strategies are how to:

  • Clarify expectations
  • Give constructive feedback to your boss
  • Use effective communication skills
  • Get the 'big picture' information you need to set context for your own staff on goals and priorities
  • Create alignment between your work and your boss’s priorities and vision

The Sexual Harassment Policy Office offers this Faculty Supervisor Harassment Prevention Training, mandated by California Law AB1825. For further information on training, contact the Sexual Harassment Office at http://harass.stanford.edu or 725-0646. No "No Show" fee, but please cancel your enrollment if you cannot attend.

Health and Safety Training (offered by Environmental Health & Safety; check STARS for dates, times, and locations)
