CCN Appointments & Policies

Eligible Stanford staff set up their own appointments directly with a career counselor of their choosing from the CCN counselors listed on this website.  Staff are limited to seeing these CCN counselors if they want to use their STAP funds to pay for the career counseling session(s).

Staff pay the counselor at the time of the appointment and then submit a form for STAP funds reimbursement provided there are sufficient STAP funds available in their STAP account.

Staff do not need their supervisor’s approval to use their $300 of STAP funds towards career counseling with a CCN counselor.

Counselors are available to see staff during and after work as well as weekend appointments.

CCN counselors will make every effort to get back to you within 48 hours.  But they may not have appointment times available for up to one week.

  • CCN counselors will see eligible Stanford staff at the CCN rate of $80/hour.
  • Assessment testing (that includes up to 4 types of tests) is $50.
  • Follow-up phone appointments are billed at $40/half-hour.

If an eligible employee doesn’t have any available remaining STAP funds, they can still see the CCN counselor at the $80/hour rate but there is not University reimbursement.

Immediate family members of a Stanford staffer (i.e. dependents, spouse or domestic partner) may also see the counselor at the discounted CCN rate but will need to pay the counselor directly.  There is no STAP reimbursement for family members seeing a CCN counselor.

Friends of Stanford staff, SU faculty, SU students, SU post docs, and visiting scholars are all welcome to see a CCN counselor at the counselor’s normal client rate and will need to pay the counselor directly because there is no STAP reimbursement.

Cancellations, Rescheduling, and No Shows

Clients are required to inform the counselor about a cancellation or rescheduling request at least 24 hours prior to their scheduled appointment.  They should leave a phone message with the counselor, not an email message.

If notice is not received prior to 24 hours before the appointment time, the counselor has the option of charging the client for the session.   Please note:  Charges for a late cancellation or no show are NOT reimbursable with STAP funds.

CCN Confidentiality Policy

Starting on September 1, 2007, authorized STARS ReportMart1 reports users (HR Managers and Administrators) may directly access reports indicating an employee's use of their STAP funds including those STAP funds used to see a CCN counselor.  Supervisors or managers may request these reports only for their own staff and only for legitimate business purposes.

All issues discussed during a career counseling session are strictly confidential between the career counselor and the client with the following exceptions:

  • Career counselors are requested to provide statistical/demographic information on the clients they see (i.e., gender, education, age range, ethnic group, exempt/non-exempt status, school or division they work in, occupational area or job title, session objectives) but the information will not be linked to specific client names.  This data will be used to determine the effectiveness of the CCN program.
  • "When a client's condition indicates that there is a clear and imminent danger to the client or others, the National Career Development Association member must take reasonable personal action or inform responsible authorities.  Consultation with other professionals must be used where possible. The assumption of responsibility for the client's behavior must be taken only after careful deliberation, and the client must be involved in the resumption of responsibility as quickly as possible," per National Career Development Association and National Board of Certified Counselors Ethical Guidelines.
