Welcome
to the Web Site for the 2nd Symposium on Portuguese for Spanish
Speakers: Acquisition and Teaching!
Portuguese for Spanish Speakers is the fastest growing
field in the teaching of Portuguese, both in the United States and
abroad, and has been the subject of an increasing number of publications
and conference presentations. It is, however, far from possessing
an established and unified body of knowledge based on research.
Aiming to start
mapping this body of knowledge, the First Symposium on Portuguese for Spanish Speakers
took place from March 21-23,
2003, at the University of Arizona, in Tucson. Two years later, the
time has come to meet again. The goal of the Second Symposium on
Portuguese for Spanish Speakers: Acquisition and Teaching is to give
scholars in field an opportunity to come together to further discuss
the development of an organized body of knowledge on the acquisition
of Portuguese by speakers of Spanish and to generate a coherent and
successful approach to the teaching of Portuguese to this population.
In addition to two keynote addresses by the renowned scholars
Milton Azevedo and Elizabeth Bernhardt, the Symposium will include the following
nine roundtable discussions:
Table I - Past, Present and Future of Teaching of Portuguese for
Spanish Speakers
Table II - Acquisition and Teaching of Phonetics and Phonology of
Portuguese for
Spanish Speakers
Table III - Acquisition and Teaching of Lexical, Syntactic, and Morphological
Components of Portuguese for Spanish Speakers
Table IV - Acquisition and Teaching of Lexical, Syntactic, and Morphological
Components of Portuguese for Spanish Speakers
Table V - Acquisition of Sociolinguistic Competence in Portuguese by Spanish
