Posting from newsgroup:

I was at Tower Books in Mountain View yesterday and I picked up a new magazine that I'd hear was coming out but hadn't premiered yet. It's called "Alive" and it's a magazine targeted at Arab-Americans, American-Arabs, Arabs-in-America, whatever...

Of course, they try to position it as a magazine that has universal appeal but it sure seems targeted to me. The premiere issue ($5.95) has some moderate quality articles and interviews. It seems that this magainze has had a previous existence in Egypt but that this is the first International edition of the magainze. Many of the articles feel like they've been translated because they certainly lost much of their zing in the translation. The read awkwardly.

The interviews in this issue include ones with Omar Sharif, Khaled (as in Cheb Khaled), Nawal El Zoghbi, Youssra (actress), and Nemeri (ex-Pres of Sudan). Articles include topics such as Beirut, Molokhia and sexual politics. The editors also don't censor for language (you have been warned!).

The format is extra large and is printed on really nice paper. It feels like WiReD without the intellectual depth. They also have a toll-free number if you are interested. 1.888.ALIVE.01 and an e-mail at alive@alivemag.com
