Project
Mainframe Retirement

Overview

The University made a decision to move its major applications off the mainframe to an Open Systems platform in the early nineties. The migration started with the implementation of the Peoplesoft Student Information/HRMS systems and the current Oracle Financials implementation project. A final date for the mainframe retirement is now set for December 15th, 2003. The mainframe retirement project was kicked off to actively move the remaining services, data, and applications off the IBM mainframe in this timeframe.

Objectives

The project encompasses all services, applications, and data hosted on the mainframe. It is the objective of the project to retire or replace the following services:

Applications/Data:

  • EMS mail
  • Learning Management System
  • Forsythe Distribution lists
  • SPIDERS
  • Printing (reports & labels)
  • SUFED
  • Fax
  • Housing Assignment
  • Microfiche
  • OOD Trust
Data:
  • Med School Applications (MESA, MedSUFED,MFASS)
  • All historical data
  • All ITSS applications
  • All Departmental Applications

When does this happen?

Although the process started a number of years ago, the final shutdown phase started in May 2002, and it will be completed in December 2003.

During this period mainframe services will be gradually curtailed, and applications will be turned off as alternatives come on-line.

What do I need to do?

You can support the successful and timely completion of the project by:

  • migrating your email from EMS mail to Leland Mail
  • migrating your distribution list from Forsythe to Majordomo
  • migrating your data from Mainframe to AFS
Information and aids for performing each of these are available at the Mainframe Retirement FAQ page.

If you administer a local or departmental application on the mainframe, it is also your responsibility to migrate this application to another platform.

Campus Participation in the Project

The project has support from Stanford University management including our Provost, John Etchemendy and our CFO Randy Livingston, and the Campus IT group which is represented by Schools and Departments around the campus.
