Kronos Version 5 Upgrade

Download Java for Kronos v5

The upgraded version of Kronos, set to be implemented on August 1, 2005 requires Java software to run.

Java Software Required

Java version 1.4.2_06 is required for all Kronos users (it is a software language); you may already have Java on your computer. If you do not have the required version, the first time you login to Kronos via the Axess portal on August 1, (http://axess.stanford.edu), the required version of Java may automatically download (see Exceptions for more detail on situations where it does NOT automatically download).

Exceptions to the Automatic Download

Mac users with an operating system (OS) less than 10.3.7: it is recommended that you first complete system updates so your operating system comes up to 10.3.9. The correct version of Java is included with Mac OS 10.3.7 or 10.3.9, so you would not then have to download Java.
Staff who do not have administrative rights to their desktops cannot download software without local desktop support. If you work in a school or department that does not allow employees to download software, your local desktop support staff will be available to download it beginning in the middle of July so you are ready to use Kronos beginning August 1.

Windows Instructions to Download Java (for PCS)

Click the download link.
The Stanford Web Authentication page appears. Click the link to continue.
The File Download - Security Warning box appears. Click Run.
The download begins.
If you get the dialog box that reads: "The publisher can not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" Click Run.
The Install Shield Wizard Begins.
The License Agreement Window appears. Select the radio button next to: "I accept the terms in the license agreement." Click Next.
For the Setup Type, choose "Typical". Click Next.
The Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v1.4.2_06 Progress Box appears. Wait until it has completed. This may take several minutes.
The Install Shield Wizard Completed box appears.
Click Finish.

Macintosh Instructions Regarding Java

Note: Mac OS X lower than 10.3.7 does not come with the right version of Java, so your operating system should be updated to 10.3.7 or 10.3.9; you will not need to separately download Java if you update your operating system.

Instructions to run software update (includes Java 1.4.2_06)

From the Apple Menu, select Software Update. The Mac checks for new updates available.
Select the updates needed (Java should be listed).
Click Install. If your system has not been updated/upgraded recently, this may take several minutes and you may need to perform more than one set of updates. Ask your local desktop support staff for help if needed.
Once the updates are completed, you may need to restart.

Instructions to download Java separately

After installing Java 1.4.2 to your Mac, you must restart your computer. It is best to exit all applications before starting the installation.

Click the download link. The Java142Update2.pkg appears in the download window.
Double-click Java142Update2.pkg. The Install Java 1.4.2 Update 2 Package window appears. A message pops up: "The installer package needs to run a program to determine if it can be installed. Do you want to continue? Click Continue.
The "Welcome" screen appears informing you that you will be guided thorugh the steps necessary to install the software. Click Continue.
The Important Information screen appears. After reading the information... Click Continue.
The Software License Agreement window appears. After reading it... Click Continue.
A message appears: "To continue installing the software, you must agree to the terms of the software license agreement. Click agree to continue or disagree to cancel the installation." Click Agree.
The Select a Destination screen appears. Select a destination volume to install the Java 1.4.2 Update 2 Package software. The hard disk icon appears. If there are multiple hard disks attached to your Mac, select the volume onto which you want Java installed. The application requires 42.0 mb of disk space. Click Continue.
Note: If you must "authenticate" the installation, the Authenticate box appears. Enter your Mac password. Click OK.
A reminder that "Installing this software requires you to restart your computer when the installation is done. Are you sure you want to install this software now? Click Continue Installation.
The installation begins. The installation includes an optimization of your System Performance which can take several minutes. When the installation is complete, a message appears: "The software was successfully installed." Click Restart.

Mac OS 10.3.7 or 10.3.9

The correct version of Java 1.4.2_06 is included; no software update or Java download needed.
