Symantec AntiVirus 10.1.6 for Windows XP

Description

Symantec AntiVirus (formerly Norton AntiVirus) is Stanford's site-licensed anti-virus software.

One of the most important features of Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) is LiveUpdate, which enables SAV to automatically retrieve new virus definitions. This ensures that SAV is prepared to detect the latest viruses. After installing SAV, make sure you configure LiveUpdate to update the virus definitions files on a regular basis. One of the most common reasons computer virus problems occur is that, after installation, antivirus users forget to update the software's virus definitions file.

System Requirements

  • Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP and 2000
  • Disk Space: 55 MB
  • RAM: 128 MB
  • Browser: Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 or later

Notes

  • This addresses a security vulnerability with SAV 10.1.5 and earlier. You should upgrade to this version immediately.

  • A revised installer for 10.1.6 was posted on 8/17/07. The updated installer addresses an issue with the version of capicom.dll installed by Symantec's installer. Users can run this newer installer over the top of their existing installation, choosing the option to "Repair" the installation to address the potential vulnerability with capicom.dll.

  • Some viruses can disable or damage Symantec AntiVirus. You may want to get a second opinion about possible virus problems on your computer. For computers that still have Internet connectivity, IT Services technical staff has had good results using HouseCall, a free web virus scan service that is available at the following URL:

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

    To use HouseCall:
    • On the HouseCall web page, click Scan Now. It's Free!
    • On the next web page, verify that your computer meets the system requirements and then then click Scan Now. It's Free!
    • Check the box to accept the terms of use and then click the Launching HouseCall button.
    • You may see a window saying that you need an additional HouseCall kernel. If HouseCall's system detection identifies more than one possible kernel, select one according to your preferences; each kernel offers the same general features. Select the kernel by clicking the corresponding Starting HouseCall button.
    • A Security Warning dialog box will be displayed, asking whether you want to run the application. Click Run.
    • Click Next to start a scan of your computer, or click Select to choose individual folders to scan and then click Next.
    • After the scan finishes, you will see the results of what was found. Please keep a copy of the results or write down the virus names; this information can be very helpful if further cleaning steps are needed.
