Configuring the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall to Work with Stanford Web Authentication and File Sharing

Some Internet programs, such as Stanford Web Authentication (also known as WebAuth), may not work as expected when the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) feature is enabled. Computers on which ICF is enabled are also prevented from sharing files.

For users who obtained their version of Windows XP through the University's Dell Bundles, ICF is turned off by default. If you purchased Windows XP on your own, ICF will be turned on by default. See the Microsoft Windows XP web site for more information about ICF and instructions on how to enable or disable it.

If you are a home user and have a dedicated connection to the network (such as a DSL line), ICF may be useful in helping to protect your computer.

To configure the Internet Connection Firewall to work with WebAuth and file sharing:

  1. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop and select Properties from the popup menu.
