Connecting Windows XP to SUNet Using Stanford DSL

These instructions are intended for Stanford's Remote SUNet Access over DSL services only. If you are using a different DSL service provider, please contact that service for installation and configuration instructions.

A DSL connection effectively provides the same type of Ethernet connection as an on-campus SUNet connection (using the network jack that an office or other on-campus computer plugs into).

Once DSL service is ordered, ITSS arranges to have DSL facilities installed at the outside termination box or NID at your home and then to have a technician install the DSL wiring and router in your home. You may have to be present for the outside installation and you must be present during the inside installation.

Notes

  • You should have an Ethernet adapter already installed and configured in your computer before the DSL wiring is installed in your home.
  • You must have a copy of the letter or email message that was sent to you by Communication Services. The letter contains your IP Address, Gateway Router Address, and Subnet Mask.
  • If you are already using an on-campus Ethernet connection and want to add DSL capabilities to the same computer (most often with a laptop computer), do not continue with these instructions without contacting the Stanford IT Help Desk first via the Web at http://helpsu.stanford.edu/ or by calling 5-HELP (725-4357). These instructions will remove your on-campus Ethernet settings.

Installing the Network Adapter

To connect your computer to the DSL router, you will need to have either built-in Ethernet, an Ethernet adapter installed in your computer, or use a PCMCIA Ethernet adapter if you have a laptop computer. If you had Windows XP pre-installed on your computer, your network card driver may have been installed for you. If a network card has not been pre-installed, ITSS recommends the 3Com 3C905 (10/100 PCI) card. You may want to get the help of your Local Network Administrator (LNA) or Expert Partner for installing the network adapter.

Configuring the TCP/IP Protocol

For DSL, you may configure your network settings before a technician comes to install the DSL router. This will not only aid in the installation process, but you can test the DSL connection with your computer while the technician is still at your home.

Note: You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure.

  1. In Windows XP, click the Start button and click Control Panel.

  2. Click the Network and Internet Connections category.

Note: If you are using Classic View, you will see the control panel icons instead of categories. Double-click the Network Connections icon and go to step 5.

    Control Panel

  3. Click the Network Connections control panel icon.

  4. Right-click the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties from the popup menu.
