Configuring OS X for an Ethernet Connection at Stanford
Register Your Computer
You must register your computer's hardware Ethernet address before your computer can communicate over SUNet.
If you already know your hardware Ethernet address and have provided it to your Local Network Administrator or Resident Computer Coordinator, you can skip to Configuring for Ethernet Connection.
Select the System Preferences button on the dock:

Select the Network button:

- Find your computer's hardware Ethernet address for Mac OS 10.3 and 10.4 or Mac OS 10.2:
To find the Mac OS 10.3 or 10.4 hardware ID (address):-
Under Show, select Built-in Ethernet and then click the Ethernet tab.

Under Configure, check to see that you have Built-In Ethernet. If not, choose Advanced and check Built-in Ethernet:

Under Configure, select Built-in Ethernet. Ensure that the TCP/IP tab is selected (highlight in blue):

- Write down the displayed Ethernet ID (Mac OS 10.3 or 10.4) or Ethernet Address (Mac OS 10.2).
- Faculty and staff shoud provide this information to their Local Network Administrator (LNA).
- On-campus students need to register their adapter on-line at the Rescomp Web site.
- Off-campus students should include this information in a HelpSU request.
You will not be able to use your computer on the network until your connection information has been registered.
Configuring for Ethernet Connection
Once you have registered your computer for network access, you can follow these steps to complete the configuration:
Select the System Preferences button on the dock:

Select the Network button:

Under Show (OS 10.3 and 10.4) or Configure (OS 10.2), select Built-in Ethernet.
Mac OS 10.3 and 10.4 Mac OS 10.2 

- In the Location field, select Automatic
- In the Configure IPv4 (OS 10.3 and 10.4) or Configure (OS 10.2) field inside the TCP/IP window, select Using DHCP
- The IP Address field will be automatically configured
- Leave the DHCP Client ID field blank
- In the Search Domains field, enter stanford.edu (optional)
- Click Apply Now (OS 10.3 and 10.4) or Save (OS 10.2) to finish the configuration.
