Technology Training Services

What We Do

The staff in Technology Training Services is responsible for coordinating and providing high quality training opportunities related to the use of computers and applications commonly used at Stanford. To this end, the group plans quarterly course offerings based on client (faculty, staff, and student) demand and ITS and Stanford service initiatives. It also works closely with other IT Services units to regularly review the training requirements of upcoming products and with other University areas to produce custom training sessions.

Each quarter, Technology Training Services offers:

  • over 60 hands-on and instructor-led training classes that cover topics from the fundamentals of computing to word processing to database management to using the Internet/Web;
  • weekly Tech Briefings that cover specific topics in informal, interactive seminars (e.g., secure file transfer, web graphics) intended for "power" users and Stanford's technology support community;
  • lunch-time Tech Express sessions that cover topics of general interest to the entire Stanford community (e.g., Essential Stanford Software, University calendaring systems);
  • over 1600 online computer-based training courses, and over 6000 online books on topics ranging from introductory computing to computer programming;
  • private, one-on-one Training by Appointment sessions on computing tasks specifically related to the clients' work and special classes for groups or departments.

Instructors come from Technology Training Services, other IT Services units, and non-Stanford organizations. Staff ensure that all instructors provide quality content and materials and meet the standards of the IT Services training program.

Additionally, the group maintains seven training facilities: Turing Auditorium, one hands-on Macintosh lab, and four hands-on Windows labs. These facilities are available not only for courses offered through IT Services, but can also be rented by other Stanford departments and groups.
