Overview of New Web Site Features
Features added to the IT Services web site on May 30, 2007:
- New catalog (lists) of services are database-generated, making essential service information and order links easy to maintain and reconcile wherever published (client-facing or internal).
- New catalog is searchable; i.e., names, descriptions, and links can be searched for without having to search linked content pages.
- New catalog’s “tailor a list to your primary affiliation or role” option allows users to login to view cohort-directed lists and special notices. Groupings, rankings, and content are maintained and edited by Client Support staff. Defined roles and affiliations currently include Department Contact, LNA, RCC, faculty, staff, and student. This function opens the door for future, targeted client communications and portal-like personalization.
- New catalog provides order links that route the user to the order tool or site appropriate for each service. For OrderIT-flow services, these links change dynamically in the “tailored” view based on whether the user is a Department Contact or not (i.e., Contacts are offered a direct link to OrderIT, others link to the OrderIT help page that explains the Department Contact enrollment and OrderIT authority process).
- New home page layout emphasizes help resources and new service catalog application.
- New home page service-focus boxes associate high-profile service links with labeled categories. A complete list of services in each category can be viewed on a separate catalog page by clicking the “more” link at the bottom of each box.
- Top navigation bar (common across all service pages) now includes a (drop-down) search box and a “quick links” menu of high-level sites and applications.
- Search box on new home page and in navigation bar searches a new Google collection focused on IT Services resources rather than the broader “Stanford Computing Resources” collection. Subsequent broadening of search is then available from the results-page interface at the Searching Stanford site.
Note: Besides the shared, site-wide navigation bar and some minor, accessibility-related changes to text styling, the introduction of new features on the home page and catalog pages did not affect IT Services’ other organizational, project, or service pages.
