Graduate Studies

Applications to Stanford for graduate-level study of Islam or aspects of Muslim societies are directed to a particular academic department (e.g., History, Religious Studies, Political Science, Anthropology, Comparative Literature etc.), and admission is granted to the applicant's desired department. It is expected that the prospective student will have completed undergraduate and/or M.A. study of Islam and Muslim societies in that department's disciplines and methodologies, and has strong support for doctoral study from current and former professors in the field. The Abbasi Program does not grant admission to Stanford, but supports and encourages the multi-departmental study of Islam and, specifically, the research and teaching of those at Stanford who are engaged in this work.

In the School of Humanities and Sciences there is funding for those who are accepted into departmental Ph.D. programs. M.A. requirements differ from department to department, there is no funding for M.A. degrees.
