Vali Nasr is a professor of Middle Eastern and South Asian Affairs in the Department of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. He has written several books, including Democracy in Iran (2006) and a bestseller, The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam will Shape the Future (2006). He also is the author of The Islamic Leviathan: Islam and the Making of State Power (2001), Mawdudi and the Making of Islamic Revivalism (1996), and was an editor of the Oxford Dictionary of Islam (2003). Nasr has written on political Islam and the comparative politics of South Asia and the Middle East for leading U.S. newspapers and academic journals. [Listen on iTunes]

Olivier Roy is research director at the CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research). He holds a state Agrégation in philosophy (1972), a Master's in Persian language and civilization from the Institut National des Langues et Civilizations Orientales (1972), a PhD in political sciences from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques (IEP) in Paris (1996) and has been qualified to supervise PhD candidates since 2001. He currently lectures at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) and the IEP and has acted as consultant to the French Foreign Ministry (Center for Analysis and Forecast) since 1984. Olivier Roy was also a consultant with UNOCA on Afghanistan in 1988, special OSCE representative to Tajikistan (August 1993 to February 1994) and headed the OSCE Mission for Tajikistan from February to October 1994. Dr. Reza Aslan, an internationally acclaimed writer and scholar of religions, is the founder of AslanMedia.com, an online journal for news and entertainment about the Middle East and the world. Reza Aslan has degrees in Religions from Santa Clara University, Harvard University, and the University of California, Santa Barbara, as well as a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa, where he was named the Truman Capote Fellow in Fiction. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities, and the Pacific Council on International Policy. He serves on the board of directors of the Ploughshares Fund, which gives grants for peace and security issues; Abraham's Vision, an educational, conflict transformation organization for Israeli and Palestinian youths; PEN USA, which champions the rights of writers under siege around the world; and the Levantine Cultural Center, which builds bridges between Americans and the Arab/Muslim world through the arts. Orhan Pamuk was born in Istanbul in 1952. His novels include Cevdet Bey and His Sons (1982), The Black Book (1990), My Name is Red (1998), and Snow (2002). Pamuk's most recent book is Istanbul, a collection of the author's early memoirs and an essay about Istanbul. Apart from three years in New York, he has spent all his life in the same district of Istanbul, and he now lives in the building where he was raised.
