Aya DeLeón
is a Black/Puerto Rican spoken word
poet and youth worker in the Oakland
area. She currently directs the Mothertongue
Institute for Creative Development.
A graduate of Harvard University, Aya
recently returned to Oakland after a
national tour that included a performance
at New York's Lincoln Center. She has
also lead creative writing workshops
at Brown University and the University
of Oregon at Eugene. Aya participated
as a member of the San Francisco team
in the National Poetry Slam 2000 and
helped the team win the Western Regional
Poetry Slam. As an individual poet,
Aya won the Burning Bush Publications'
"People Before Profits" Poetry Prize,
2000.
