Spoken Word Workshop
Lead by
Aya DeLeón

This Spoken Word workshop with Aya de Leon will provide poetry and prose writing instruction emphasizing the spoken word performance. Students will have an expressive and non-judgmental space to explore race and gender issues from their personal perspective and develop performance works. A major focus will be the development of a new radical poetry aesthetic that can inspire activists and movements for social change. Projects will include writing and performance, with possible opportunities for youth outreach and community presentation of student works.

Aya DeLeón is a Black/Puerto Rican spoken word poet and youth worker in the Oakland area. She currently directs the Mothertongue Institute for Creative Development. A graduate of Harvard University, Aya recently returned to Oakland after a national tour that included a performance at New York's Lincoln Center. She has also lead creative writing workshops at Brown University and the University of Oregon at Eugene. Aya participated as a member of the San Francisco team in the National Poetry Slam 2000 and helped the team win the Western Regional Poetry Slam. As an individual poet, Aya won the Burning Bush Publications' "People Before Profits" Poetry Prize, 2000.
