What are the Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships?

The Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships are internationally recognized, prestigious scholarships which provide generous stipends for two years of study in Britain; the Rhodes at Oxford and the Marshall at any British university. They can be used to pursue any subject or degree. The rules of eligibility differ somewhat. Students who have strong undergraduate academic and extracurricular records are eligible to apply.

The competition for both of these scholarships is very strong, but please do not be deterred by this factor alone. If you meet the eligibility requirements and have strong, persuasive reasons for wanting to study at a British university, please consider applying. Please note: Both awards require official endorsement from Stanford University.

Where to Apply

The Rhodes Scholarships

The Rhodes Scholarships, established in 1903, bring outstanding students from around the world to pursue their studies at the University of Oxford. Each year, the Rhodes selection committees seek "excellence in qualities of the mind and in qualities of person which, in combination, offer the promise of effective service to the world in the decades ahead." Rhodes Scholarships are awarded for two years of study, with the possibility of renewal for a third. All educational costs are paid on the Scholar's behalf by the Rhodes Trust.

Thirty-two Scholarships are offered to American students every year. You are eligible to apply if you meet the following criteria:

    • Citizen of the United States*. Pending application for citizenship does not qualify.
    • Age: By October 1 of the year they apply, applicant must have passed the 18th and not passed the 24th birthday.
    • Completion of Bachelor's Degree before October of the year they apply.

*Special Note for Commonwealth Students: For students with citizenship from the following countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Bermuda, Canada, Commonwealth Caribbean & Jamaica, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, Southern Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Each of these countries allows students studying in the United States to apply for the Rhodes Award. In addition to the 32 awards offered each year to U.S. student citizens, additional scholarships are available for these countries. Stanford students have won these overseas Rhodes awards in the past, including winners from Bermuda, Malaysia, Canada, India and South Africa.

British Marshall Scholarships

Founded by Act of Parliament in 1953, the British Marshall Scholarships commemorate the "human ideals" of the European Recovery Programme (Marshall Plan). The Scholarships are intended to express the gratitude of the British people to the American people for the Marshall plan by encouraging "intellectually distinguished young Americans who will one day become leaders, opinion formers and decisions makers..." to study for a degree in the United Kingdom.

Each year, up to forty Marshall Scholarships are awarded for two years of study in any British university and in any discipline (either at undergraduate or graduate level) leading to the award of a British university degree. The total award value of a Marshall Scholarship will vary according to circumstances (selected university, residence, etc.), but will include payment of tuition fees, personal allowance, grant for books, and travel expenses.

Those who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply for Marshall Scholarships:

    • Citizen of the United States.
    • Age: There is no age limit, but applicants must apply within two years of finishing their first undergraduate four-year degree.
    • Hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States (by the time the scholarship commences).
    • Applicants must have a grade point average of NOT LESS THAN 3.7 (or A-) for their entire undergraduate career

Where do I apply?

Rhodes

All Stanford students currently enrolled MUST apply through the Overseas Resource Center (ORC). Recent graduates who will be available for campus interviews in October may also apply through the ORC. Formal institutional endorsement is required as part of the application procedures. Only those who enter the campus level competition are considered for Stanford's endorsement. There are no exceptions. Please note that endorsement by Stanford is not automatic.

Marshall

All Stanford students currently enrolled MUST apply through the ORC. Recent graduates can either be endorsed through the university process (as with the Rhodes, endorsement by Stanford is not automatic) or by their employer. If you choose to be endorsed by your employer, services available at the ORC will be limited.
