The American University in Cairo (AUC) offers internships to graduating seniors primarily colleges and universities across the United State with the unique opportunity about the internal dynamic of university administratin while living in Cairo. Interns work in AUC administrative offices for one academic ye ar. The American University in Cairo is a private university which has served a unique and important function in Cairo since its founding in 1919. The language of instruction is English, and the curriculum emphasizes the liberal arts. 90% of AUC's students are Egyptian; the rest come from elsewhere in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America. In addition to its academic programs, AUC has a large (30,000 students) adult education program and 10,000 students in in-service training (primarily management and engineering). It also has applied research centers in social and desert development. (Additional information about AUC and living in Cairo will be provided to applicants later on in the application process.)

Internships are available in the following university areas: President's Office, Communicatin and Marketing, Lew Department, Performing and Visual Arts Department, Social Reserch Center, Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement, Vice Presidents Office, and the Desert Development.

The Award

The Presidential Internship Program begins with a one-week orientation program in late August, and the internships begin in September.  Each intern receives a stipend to cover basic expenses during their time in Cairo.  All interns are provided with the following:

  • Stipend, paid over ten months.  This amount should be sufficient for basic living expenses.
  • Health Insurance: AUC will provide basic ambulatory medical care through the AUC clinic.
  • Housing: Interns will be housed in AUC apartments. Housing, utilities, and basic maintenance are supplied free of cost.

  • Academic/Travel Opportunities: Each semester interns may take one academic course at AUC, as well as an evening adult education course (including Arabic), at no cost. Opportunities also exist for travel both with AUC and on one's own.
