Overview

The Fulbright Program was created by Congress in 1946 to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchanges.  The Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship is a new component of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and will be inaugurated in the academic year 2012-2013.  This award will provide the opportunity for U.S. citizens to contribute to the strengthening of the public sector abroad. 

The Award

For one academic year, fellows will serve in professional placements in foreign government ministries or institutions and gain hands on experience in the public sector while also carrying out an academic research project. Host country governments and the U.S. Department of State will organize placements in a variety of public policy areas, including, but not limited to, public health, education, agriculture, justice, energy, environment, public finance, economic development, information technology and communications.

The partner country governments include Bangladesh, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Mongolia, Nepal, Nigeria, Thailand, and Tunisia

Eligibility

Candidates for a Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen by November 1, 2011
  • Prior to the grant period, Fall 2012, must have a Master’s degree with an with an area of focus applicable to public policy, a J.D. degree or be currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program
  • Must have two years of full-time, professional work experience in policy-related fields
  • Must apply At-Large

The Application

A Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship application consists of the following:

  • Complete the Embark Fulbright U.S. Student Online Application
  • Complete the essays
    • Essay #1: Statement of Grant Purpose
      • Part A: Policy Fellowship Goals
      • Part B: Situational Response
    • Essay #2: Personal Statement
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Three references, submitted through the Embark system
  • Foreign Language Self-Evaluation
  • Foreign Language Evaluations, submitted by the evaluators through Embark system

Applicants may select up to three countries of preference and will be considered for all participating countries based on the candidate’s qualifications and individual country requirements. 
Although there is no Stanford campus process for the Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship, interested students should contact the ORC for guidance on the application process as well as review the Fulbright Website for details.
