Japan Day

Japan Day will be an opportunity for people to have fun, eat Japanese food, and at the same time get some hands-on experience with traditional aspects of Japanese culture.

Taiwanese Night Market
Location: White Plaza

The Taiwanese Cultural Society presents its annual Night Market. Come enjoy free food and entertainment presented by all different Asian American groups.

Borrowed Fire:The Shadow Puppets of Kerala

Shot in south India, this documentary exquisitely captures the struggle of the last surviving scholar-puppeteer to practice and preserve an ancient performing art– a rare and poignant glimpse of a flame on the verge of extinction. Mr. Hoffman will discuss how his tenure as a Marshall scholar at Oxford University contributed to his professional development.

Beautiful Me: Finding Our Revolutionary Selves in Black Cuba – Documentary

This intimate travel diary follows a diverse group of students from Yale University to Cuba for a field trip of a lifetime. Presented by the Caribbean Students Association and the Cuban American Undergraduate Student Association.

Time for a Fresh Look at Immigration Policy? – Panel Discussion

President Obama has identified comprehensive immigration legislation as a priority in his first year in office. What reforms can we realistically expect?
Panelists include David Figueroa Ortega (Consul General of Mexico, San Jose), Professor Dan Siciliano (Associate Dean and Senior Lecturer in Law), and prominent immigration attorney, Marc Van Der Hout (of Van Der Hout, Brigagliano & Nightingale, LLP).

Aparna Hegde, founder of NGO ARMAAN in India, Obstetrician/Gynecologist and Surgeon from Mumbai, India, Masters student in Biology at Stanford

Peter Frykman, founder and CEO of Driptech Inc., received his B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University

An Evening of Music and Dance
– This event will be held on the lawn at Bechtel International Center. Bring a blanket.

5:30 - 6:30 p.m. in the Assembly Room: Sample the “typical” food of the Philippines.

6:30 - 9:30 p.m. in the Side Lawn: PERFORMANCES

Taiko
Taiko is the Japanese word for drum. The Stanford Taiko is a collegiate performing ensemble.

Persian Dance
The Persian Student Association (PSA) presents the Beshkan Academy dancers who will perform modern, classical and traditional dances from Iran.

Turkish Live Music and Folk Dance
Enjoy the dances of the Thrace and Black Sea regions in Turkey by the Yore Folk Dance Ensemble.

Filipino Dance and Music
Sponsored by the Filipino Graduate Students Association and the Pilipino American Student Union. Songs from the Philippines will be performed and the Kayumanggi Dance Troupe will dance the Tinikling or “bamboo dance.”

Mariachi
Mariachi is the expression of cultural revolution conveyed through music. A performance by the Mariachi Cardenal de Stanford, the Stanford student Mariachi ensemble.


Saturday - May 16

Fire on Fire Fest III

A multinational BBQ party will bring together the outdoor cuisines from Turkey, Mexico, Germany, Greece & Iran. Stanford ID is required.


Sunday - May 17

Mela

Location: Dinkelspiel Auditorium

Mela is Sanskriti’s annual South Asian performance and cultural show.
