Orientation Handbook for J-1 Exchange Visitors to Stanford University

Temporary Accommodation and Housing

Due to the high demand for housing in the Silicon Valley area (in which Stanford is situated) there may be difficulty in finding reasonably priced housing. Unfortunately the Bechtel International Center CANNOT provide assistance in finding housing accommodations. Please contact your host department with housing concerns. Please also refer to the information below regarding the Off-Campus Housing Office.

•Temporary– There are many motels and hotels in the Stanford area that are available for temporary accommodation. These may be found in the Yellow Pages of the telephone book. There is also a listing of near-by motels and hotels available from the I-Center Information Desk that provides distance from campus, phone numbers and approximate daily rates.

The Bechtel International Center has a room available for short-term accommodation providing two twin beds, and private bath. Rates are $45 per night for single occupancy and $55 per night for double occupancy.  To reserve the room, you must have your Stanford department make the reservation for you at (650) 723-1271.

The SLAC Guest House, 2575 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park, (650) 926-2800 is close to campus. Prices vary between $65-$109. The free Marguerite shuttle operates between the SLAC and Stanford Campus between 7:30 a.m.-5:50 p.m.

If you do not have accommodation reserved ahead of time in the Stanford area, go to or call the Stanford Terrace Inn, 531 Stanford Avenue, (650) 857-0333 and tell them you have been referred by the Bechtel International Center.
