ENGLISH CLASSES – Fall Quarter 2008
FOR INTERMEDIATE-ADVANCED STUDENTS
- CLASSES BEGIN: Monday, September 22, 2008 and end Friday, December
5 , 2008.
- No
classes will be held from November 24th -28th , 2008
- Thanksgiving Recess.
- Classes are open to Stanford students, post-doctoral scholars,
and their family members.
- Classes meet once a week and are informal.
Please arrange childcare for babies. PLEASE BE ON TIME.
- To attend, simply go to a class at
the indicated starting time; advance registration is not required.
- There is no tuition charge. Students may take more than one
class. Any questions- call Mary Ann Saunders at 854-2840.
- BEGINNING STUDENTS should contact
Adult Education programs. These classes are also free of charge.

I. PRACTICAL ENGLISH FOR DAILY LIVING – shopping,
eating out, phone calls, etc.

II. DISCUSSION OF CURRENT EVENTS– short
readings in class will set the stage for analyzing and discussing
hot topics.

III. CONVERSATION SKILLS FOR EVERYDAY
LIVING – gain
confidence in expressing feelings, needs, and ideas.

IV. AMERICAN LIFE AND HUMOR – through
various media, such as, newspapers, magazines,
film, funnies and the internet, students share their observations
about American life and humor.

V. AMERICAN IDIOMS AND ISSUES – presentation
and practice of common idioms; reading, writing, pronunciation
skills and discussion compose the class activities.

VI. AMERICAN CUSTOMS AND INSTITUTIONS – a
survey of American culture and traditions.

VII. EXPRESS YOURSELF WITH CONFIDENCE - listen to dialogues
and practice situations in American life, such as: small talk,
making requests, expressing opinions, etc.

VII. WRITING CLEAR ENGLISH - an
opportunity to improve your English writing skills.
This class will include short homework assignments.

VIII. VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT & ACCENT
REDUCTION – assistance
in improving vocabulary and making yourself understood. Each
class builds on the preceding one.

IX. MEDIA AND THE U.S. CULTURE – learn
through readings and discussions how media: print, TV and
radio, affect the U.S. culture.

X. INTRODUCTION TO THE AMERICAN SHORT
STORY - read stories
taught in U.S. schools; improve vocabulary & discussion
skills. A small materials fee will be collected in class

differences in national cultures to
