Classes & Programs for Spouses & Partners
Summer 2008-2009

Friday Morning Coffee:

This informal gathering is an ideal way to meet other spouses and learn about the many options for enriching your stay in the Stanford area.  Join us every Friday, between 10 a.m. and noon!  We each bring a snack or fruit or juice to go with the coffee and tea provided by the I-Center.  Volunteers are always needed to help set -up (at 9:45 a.m.) and put away afterwards!  Everyone (with and without children, new and returning) is equally welcome!  Go here for the children’s program, Move for Joy!, at Friday Coffee. Please note there will be no Friday Morning Coffee or classes on July 3rd due to the holiday.


Spouse Workshops, Groups & Events

  • Yoga for All.  With Allison Philippsen, on Wednesdays, July 15th through August 19th, 10:00 – 11:00 am. Free. This is a beginners Yoga class open to all! Please wear comfortable clothing which is suitable for stretching and ease of movement. Please don’t eat anything heavy 3 hours before the class. A light snack is ok. Bring your yoga mat! Fee: $5.  Please pay the teacher at the first class.

  • Current Affairs. With Susanne Maas & Anke Scholmerich. Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month, 8:00 – 9:30 pm, beginning June 9 through the Fall quarter. Like to know what’s going on in the world, but no time? Then join us for a discussion of the latest news with wine and cheese!! Everyone brings his/her own snack.

  • Enjoy your life at Stanford (In Japanese). With Ayano Yamazaki and Yoko Seita. Monday July 6 and August 10, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. Free. Welcome to Stanford! Are you new here? Then come to this workshop. We offer useful information to live here and introduce a psychological process to adapt to the new environment. We are looking forward to meeting you!

  • Indian Traditional Wedding. With Hina Agarwal, Wednesday July 15, 3:00 – 4:30 pm.  Free. You’re invited to our demonstration of an Indian Traditional wedding, featuring it’s ceremonies, its functions, its dances, the wedding attire, the songs, decor and much more.  Come & enjoy the Indian wedding!!   • Online Marketing – Affiliate Marketing. With Hina Agarwal, Starts Thursday, June 25, 4:30 - 5:30 pm. $4 for 4 sessions. Overview of online marketing (website marketing), different aspects of online marketing, affiliate marketing, ways to earn money through Affiliate Marketing, Publisher, Advertiser, Campaigns, Performance based marketing.  Hina will share her related work experience.   • Marketing Insights. With Martin Sutnar. Every other Tuesday, 10:00 - 11:30 am.  July 7 to August 11. $3.00 All welcome, no prior knowledge required. The class focuses on gaining insights into basic marketing and the main and strongest marketing instruments: What is marketing, what’s the marketing strategy, marketing mix, four P’s, customer needs and behaviors, etc. Martin will share his 10+ years of experience in the field.

  • Reading Group, Meet every other Monday 3:00 – 5:00 pm. Shelagh Dunn <ninjadunn@hotmail.com>, Hyeyon Moon <hennymoon@gmail.com>.  Everyone is welcome to join the group, help select books and share opinions and perspectives on the readings.   • Video “Women in a New Land” and It’s creation. Free. Wednesday July 1st, 4:00 pm. Join us for the screening of this film featuring the lives of four spouses who came to Stanford to accompany their husbands. Created and filmed by Maria Vaccaro, herself a spouse from Belgium. After the screening, the director will share the “inside story” of how the film was made and welcome your questions and comments.

  • Male Spouses Meet-up. With Jasper van der Bruggen. Next meeting at the end of July.  Join other male spouses for a beer at Blue Chalk www.bluechalk.com, 630 Ramona Street, Palo Alto, to meet others and share ideas about possible future activities. Look for Jasper from the Netherlands, in the red polo shirt. Contact jasper1976@hotmail.com.

  • Women’s Night Out. With Cathrin Mugai (axel_cathrin@freenet.edu). Every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. Meet at 8:00 p.m. at the CoHo Café Tresidder Union, Stanford University, 459 Lagunita Drive. Join the group for a women’s get-together. For details , please email Pamela.

Language Classes

All classes are taught by volunteers. Fees cover cost of photocopies or handouts. Would you like to teach your language? See Gwyn Dukes gdukes@stanford.edu) to discuss the possibilities!

  • Informal English Classes: Paper copies of the schedule are also available at I-Center.
  • Spanish For Beginners. With Katty Munoz & Darcy Harrington, starting June 23rd, 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. $3.00. If you want to learn or practice your Spanish during this Summer, join the class, and also learn about the culture of Chile.

  • French for Beginners. Tuesdays with Carole Cabreton, beginning Tuesday June 30, 11:00 am-12:00 pm. $3.00. Learn to speak French with a native speaker.

Cooking Classes:

Pay all Cooking class fees in advance at the upstairs desk.
  • English Afternoon Tea Party. With Chris Nolan & Janice Hatcher. Wednesday July 15th, 2:30 – 4:30 pm. Come and enjoy an English afternoon tea party. You will learn how to make scones (demonstration only) and then drink Indian tea with cucumber sandwiches and scones with jam and cream. It’s delicious! Fee: $5.00. Class is currently full but there is a waiting list.
  • Solar cooking demonstration. With Vida Revilla, July 17 and August 7. 10:00 -12:00, during the Friday Coffee. Join Vida at the Friday Morning Coffee on July 17 to see how a Solar Oven works and what you can cook in it!. The demonstration is subject to sufficient sunshine!

Arts, Crafts & Photography

Check board for details about materials you’ll need to bring to class.

  • Sew simple. With Allison Philippsen, Wednesdays July 15th through August 20th, 11:30 – 1:00 pm. Fresh and easy sewing projects for everyday life. We will make a simple purse – you can’t have too many of these handy bags!!!. Please bring 5/8 yd medium weight cotton or linen, ½ yd med. weight contrasting cotton or linen, wash it and dry it before the first class. Note: There will also be a limited amt. of fabric available for use. Fee: $10.00. Please sign up and pay at the I-Center, Front Desk (second floor).

Especially for Children

  • Baby and Toddler Group with Story time. Meets Tuesdays at 10:30 in the I-Center patio or assembly room. Contact Shelagh Dunn <stdunn@ualberta.ca> or Luzia Bader-Enz <luzia.baderenz@gmail.com> with questions.  Informal playgroup with a short story time in the beginning. All are welcome!

  • Move for Joy!  Sports for kids ages 2 – 5.  Come and join this parent-participation sports class at 10:30 a.m. on Friday mornings, June 19 through August 14. Children will have fun as they discover and develop their body awareness, strength, balance and coordination.  They will also interact in semi-structured group games.  Julia Blechert, the leader, welcomes your ideas for games, too!  Please bring a ball, skipping rope and hula hoop!

  • Japanese reading/singing circle for toddlers and preschoolers. With Akiko Kosuge, Tuesdays, 4:00-5:30 p.m. You and your child will enjoy listening to others' favorite stories. Bring one of your favorite books written either in Japanese or in English and read it in Japanese for children sitting in a circle. Also enjoy Japanese songs.   • International PlayGroup in the Park meets on Wednesdays, 4 to 6 p.m. at Juana Briones Park, on Arastradero Road in Palo Alto. Parents and children of all ages are welcome!  Contact Luzia: luzia.enz@web.de.

Career, Education & Information

rainbow head The Resource Center for International Families: The Resource Center provides information about getting settled in the Stanford area and building your life here. Spouse volunteers are available to speak with you in many languages about continuing your education, volunteering, employment, recreation, & travel. Hours are posted in the lobby and on the website.

Professional Liaison for International Spouses: Program begins again in Fall Quarter: Meet a local person with similar career interests.  Application forms are available in the I-Center lobby on the first floor.  For more information, see Gwyn Dukes, Room 214, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 1pm to 5pm.
