The Work-Life Office at Stanford (723-2660), 655 Serra St. and Escondido Village Center, offers information and resources on quality child care on campus, as well as in the surrounding communities. You may obtain current information on parenting, summer camps, prenatal and childbirth resources, and how to balance school, work and family life.
On the Stanford campus the following programs are offered for infants and preschool children. (Please contact the centers directly. Many have waiting lists):

  • Children's Center of the Stanford Community, 685 Pampas Lane (853-3090). A cooperative childcare center for ages 2 months to 5 years.
  • Stanford Arboretum Children's Center, 215 Quarry Road, Medical Center, Stanford, (725-6322). Provides full or part-time care for ages 2 months to 5 years.
  • Knowledge Beginnings, 625 Clark Way (723-8700), offers full-day and part-day schedules for children 2 months to 5years old.
  • The Rainbow School, 845 Escondido Rd. (723-0217), offers ahalf-day or 9 AM-3 PM nursery school program for children2.9 years to 5 years.
  • Bing Nursery School, 850 Escondido Road (723-4865)is part of Stanford’s Department of Psychology. Its half-day program for children 2 to 5 years, provides a laboratory setting for teaching and research in child development.
Many other pre-school programs in nearby communities are listed in the yellow pages of your telephone book under "Child Care Centers" and "School-Academic-Pre-Schools, Kindergartens". You may want to observe at several schools before making a selection for your child. Other resources for parents seeking part- or full-time child care include: After-school programs are offered at some local elementary schools (ask at your school office), on campus contact the Pepper Tree After School Program (723-3646). Parents may learn about child development through enrolling with their child in the Pre-School Family (856-0833) at 4120 Middlefield Road, or Parents Nursery School (856-1440). Other parenting classes are offered by the Children's Health Council (326-5530) and at Bing School (723-4865) on campus. The Palo Alto/Menlo Park Mothers Club, for mothers with infants through 5 years old, meet the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Room of the Lucie Stern Community Center, 1305 Middlefield Rd. The club also organizes outings for the children. Call 306-8182 for more infromation.
