American Studies
The Program in American Studies is an interdisciplinary major that seeks to convey a broad understanding of American culture and society in all their complexity. Building on a foundation of courses in history and institutions, literature and the arts, and race and ethnicity, students bring a range of disciplines to bear on their efforts to analyze and interpret America's past and present, forging fresh and creative syntheses along the way. Cantor Arts Center
The Cantor Arts Center at Stanford offers a wide range of presentations,
including three major changing exhibitions, smaller-scale shows,
and rotating installations of its collection in 18 galleries. Its
Rodin sculpture garden features 20 bronzes by Auguste Rodin. Student
internships are among a number of ways the center connects with Stanford’s
academic programs. More
Center for African Studies
Although there is not an African Studies major at Stanford, the Center
for African Studies seeks to specifically acknowledge Stanford undergraduates
who chose to take our courses, which cover a wide, interdisciplinary range
of topics relating to Africa. Both the minor in African Studies as well
as the certificate in African Studies are interdisciplinary area studies
programs that allow the participating student the opportunity to select
relevant courses in various departments according to his or her interests.

The Stanford University Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics
(CCRMA) is a multi-disciplinary facility where composers and researchers
work together using computer-based technology both as an artistic medium

Creative Writing
In 1946, Wallace Stegner founded the Creative Writing Program at Stanford,
where he served on the faculty until 1971. There are now more than 350
university writing programs in this country, but Stanford's remains one
of the most highly regarded. It provides Stanford students in all departments
with writing courses in fiction and poetry, from beginning to advanced
classes, and offers emerging writers in fiction and poetry the shelter
and opportunity to advance their work through Stegner Fellowships. More

Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve
Several landmark studies in ecology have been based at the preserve. In
particular, the work of Stanford Professors Paul Ehrlich and Harold Mooney
have been important in setting research trends, drawing new investigators,
and training graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Undergraduates
also participate in research at the preserve. More
Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project at Stanford University is a
major research effort to assemble and disseminate historical information
about Martin Luther King, Jr. and the social movements in which he participated.
Building upon its principal mission of publishing Rev. King's most significant
correspondence, sermons and speeches, the Project uses multimedia and
computer technology to make documentary information about King's ideas
and achievements available to scholars, teachers, and the public. The
Project also offers unique opportunities for students to become involved
in its research through the King Research Fellowship Program. More

The Program in Science, Technology & Society (STS) is an interdisciplinary major which offers undergraduates integrated studies of the natures and relationship of science, technology, and engineering, and of the social relations of science and technology. STS alumni have forged successful careers in a variety of fields, including business, engineering, law, public service, medicine, and academia. STS offers both a B.A. & B.S. degree program, an honors program, and a minor. More
Special Language Program
Stanford students are required to complete one year of college-level study
in a foreign language (or the equivalent). Choices range from African
and Middle Eastern languages to Chinese or Russian. Through the Special
Language Program, students have the option of studying a language not
normally offered at Stanford. More
Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts (SiCa)
The Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts is infusing the arts into the fabric of the university. Through the development of new undergraduate arts programs, hosting artists in residence, awarding grants for multidisciplinary arts research and teaching, incubating collaborative performances and exhibitions with campus partners and other institutions, and providing centralized communication for Stanford arts events and programs, SiCa is working to place creativity at the center of a twenty-first-century education. Founded in 1969 at Stanford University, Lively Arts produces and presents music, theater, dance, spoken word, and multi-media events. It places a special focus on innovation and risk-taking, and through commissions and premieres is an incubator and destination for new work. More
