Many of the School's departments are ranked among the top tier in their field in the world, a status that has taken decades to achieve and one that we are working diligently to preserve and advance. These rankings, which are produced by various professional associations, academic and non-academic publications, are based on many factors, including a department's reputation for scholarship, curriculum, and the quality of its faculty and students.
In the summer of 1995, the National Research Council published a comprehensive evaluation of research-doctorate programs in the United States, the first major assessment of its type since 1982. The NRC has not published another report since that time, but one is expected within the next few years. Five broad areas were studied: arts and humanities, engineering, physical sciences and mathematics, social and behavioral sciences, and biological sciences. Responses from 8,000 graduate faculty members at 274 public and private institutions were evaluated. Faculty members were asked to rate doctoral programs on the quality of their faculty and their effectiveness in educating research scholars and scientists.
