Teaching
Students
who enter on the Department Fellowship are required to complete 4 quarters
of teaching experience. Teaching must be completed by the end of the student's
third year in the program. Self-support students are required to complete
2 quarters of teaching experience. Teaching experience includes teaching assistantships
and teaching their own Sources and Methods course.
Candidacy
Students apply for candidacy to the PhD program by the end of their 2nd year in the program.
Orals
The University Orals Examination is typically taken at the beginning of the 3rd year in the program.
Languages
Language requirements vary depending on the field of study.
Time to degree
The Department of History expects most PhD students to spend no less than four and no more than six years to complete work for the PhD degree.
University's residency requirement
135 units of full-tuition residency are required for PhD students. After that, a student should have completed all course work and must request Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) status.
