Find out how to apply for housing at Stanford on the Housing Assignment web site.

Keys

Please check in and pick up your keys at your local Housing Front Desk. Be sure to keep your key with you and keep the door of your room or apartment locked at all times. Please do not prop doors open as this creates a security risk for everyone living in your residence.

You must present government issued photo identification before signing for your keys. The contact information and address for the Front Desk staff can be viewed at this link:  http://www.stanford.edu/dept/rde/shs/hsc/.

ID Card

All University members (staff, faculty, students, etc) are required to obtain an identification card. New students are sent an application form for obtaining their Stanford ID Card before their first quarter of registration. Students who do not receive an application can download a copy or they can obtain their card at the Stanford Card Office after they arrive on campus in Harold Module at 632 Serra Street. For additional information please call (650) 498-2273.

Storage

Some residences have storage rooms for students to store suitcases or other items. Please check with your Housing Front Desk to see if outside storage is available.

You can store boxes and bikes (for a fee) with Stanford Student Storage at http://studentstorage.stanford.edu. You can also order boxes and tape through this service as well. Please log on-line at http://www.stanford.edu/dept/hds/shs/ or call (650) 725-9143

US Mail

Student mail is not delivered to undergraduate residences. United States Post Office Boxes are available to rent through the Registrar's Student P.O. Box Rental Office at a cost of $50.00 for the academic year, September 1 to August 31. Per quarter or partial year rentals are not available. You must be a registered student within the academic year to acquire a Stanford University P.O. Box. Priority is given to students in the residences without mail service.

Freshman and transfer students are automatically assigned a P.O. Box. All other students must apply for a box at the Student P.O. Box Rental Office, 630 Serra Street, Suite 120.

Package Delivery

You should plan for your personal belongings to arrive after you have arrived on campus. There are no storage arrangements available for accepting and holding mail or packages arriving prior to a student’s arrival. UPS and some other package delivery services will deliver packages to your room or one of their distribution points after you move in. In general the Housing Front Desks do not accept deliveries for students. However they can accept small deliveries for students after 2 attempts have been made by the mail carrier to deliver directly to the student in the residence.

Telephone and Cable TV

New students to campus need not apply for telephone service. The basic phone line with call waiting, as well as the in-room network connections will be active when you arrive. To determine your telephone number, dial 7-CALL (7-2255) from the residence phone.

Each bedroom has a jack capable of having a separate line with its own number and one wall phone already installed for your convenience. All telephone outlets will have the same number and you may plug your own phone into any of the jacks. Stanford provides basic phone service with call waiting, free local calling, and free domestic long distance, as well as a network connection with multiple IP addresses. This service is included in the Telecommunication Fee and is charged on your University bill. International long distance calls as well as 411 (directory assistance) calls must be placed using a code called a Personal Billing Number or PBN. The PBN can be ordered on axess.stanford.edu at your My IT Services Site.

An in-room phone feature package, including voice mail and Caller ID, as well as Cable TV are optional services which can be ordered for a monthly fee (students must provide their own Caller ID equipment and television sets). These optional services can be ordered on axess.stanford.edu at your My IT Services Site.

In apartments, the living room outlet can't be a separate line; it can only be an extension of a bedroom line. If you only have one line, a bedroom outlet must be the main outlet and the other outlets will be extensions. Because your phone line depends on the room you choose and whether you want to share a phone with your roommate, you cannot arrange for service ahead of time.

Stanford University Communications and Networking Services offers several different cable packages, which include national, international, and satellite channels, courses televised by the Stanford Instructional Television Network, and other special Stanford-originated programming. To turn on the cable television service, which costs approximately $28 per month for the basic analog package or $40 for the basic digital package, sign up for it when you turn on your phone line. You will need a 75-ohm coaxial cable with an "F" connector at each end to connect your TV to the wall plate in your bedroom or living room. Cables are available at Forsythe Hall in Room 190. If your tv is not cable ready, additional purchases may be necessary.

Parking

Parking is strictly enforced throughout campus seven days a week. You may park in any of the lots adjacent to your residence with a valid Stanford University parking permit. Purchase a resident parking sticker at the Parking and Transportation Office at 340 Bonair Siding Rd (half a block north of Serra Street). Their office is located across the street from the on-campus Valero (Gas) Station. They are open Monday-Friday from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm and can be reached by telephone at (650) 723-9362 or email at transportation@stanford.edu. Your Stanford student ID will be required for you to purchase a permit. Please refer to the campus map to view the parking zones for each residential area.

Cars, trucks, and motorcycles parked in the parking lots without a parking sticker will be ticketed, as will those who park on the lawn, at a red or blue curb, next to an apartment door, on a sidewalk, or in a disabled access spot. If you have a guest, be sure to buy them a scratch-off day permit for $4.50. They are available for sale at the Parking and Transportation Office at 340 Bonair Siding Road or online through Cardinal Mall (http://cardinalmall.stanford.edu). You may purchase daily scratchers on Cardinal Mall and have them delivered at your Housing Front Desk Front Desk. Guests who park in residence lots without a permit are likely to get a parking ticket.

The Marguerite Shuttle is a free shuttle bus that serves the Stanford Campus. You can get schedules for any of the shuttles at Tresidder Union or on the Parking and Transportation web site  or at 340 Bonair Siding Road or online at http://transportation.stanford.edu/marguerite/MargueriteShuttle.shtml.

Fire Safety

Halogen lamps and candles are not permitted in any student residence because of the danger of fire.

Earthquake Safety

Download an earthquake safety brochure "Be Quake Safe" in a printer friendly format (pdf).

Repairs

Emergency requests (such as a flood, non-functioning light, ants, broken window, or door that cannot be secured) should be directed to (650) 725-1602 at any time of day or night. Non-emergency repairs for repairs or replacement in your room or common areas must be requested online using the on-line fix-it-request form (http://fixit.stanford.edu) and your request will be processed as soon as possible according to the level of urgency.  Cleaning and inspection questions can be directed to the Housing Supervisor or the Front Desk Coordinator.

Apartment and Resident Hall Room Condition Forms

At move in, each occupant of an apartment or residence hall room is expected to read carefully and complete an online Room Condition Form (http://movein.stanford.edu).

If you change rooms during the year, be sure to fill out a new form online. The Room Condition Form gives you the opportunity to declare the condition of your room and its contents upon moving in and reduces the possibility of your being charged for a pre-existing condition.

The Housing Supervisor or Regional Housing Manager will follow up on all reported problems and take corrective action as appropriate. You will be billed for any loss or damage not reported by you on the Apartment/Room Condition Form.
