Repairs
If you have an emergency situation (such as a flood, a
shower that won't turn off, an apartment door that won't
lock, etc.),
please call 5-1602. Staff at that number will contact whoever
is needed to respond to the emergency. This number is staffed
24 hours a day, and is for emergencies only.
All other requests for service must be submitted via fix-it
form.
Housing
Policies and Services
Visit the Housing
Policies and Services
page for complete information about services available
in Graduate Housing and the policies governing life there.
Vacuum
Cleaners and Dollies
Your
residence office has vacuum cleaners and dollies for residents
who would like to borrow one for up to four hours. You will
need to leave a picture identification card at the office
and pick it up when you return the vacuum cleaner or dolly.
A dolly is a cart with two wheels used to move boxes and
suitcases (see photo at right). Some people use the term
"hand cart."
Laundry
Rooms
There are change machines in the laundry rooms that take
one- and five-dollar bills. Be considerate and remove your
laundry when it's done; abandoned laundry may be moved from
the machines by your neighbors.
Lock Out
Assistance
During Office Hours:
Bring your ID to the office for a lockout key. If your ID is not available, bring someone who can
identify you to the office. If no one is available, the
office staff will ask you some questions and check your
records to verify your identity.
Before Or After Office Hours:
Call 5-1602 and be prepared to give a phone number where
you can be reached to arrange for lockout service. Before or after hours include:
- After midnight until 8:00 a.m., Sunday -Thursday, $250
- After 1:00 a.m until 8:00 a.m., Friday - Saturday, $250
- From midnight to midnight
on University holidays, $250
Charges represent the union-mandated minimum callback pay. A technician is not sent out until the charge is agreed to. A Lock Out Form must be signed at the time of service and charges are posted to the Univesity bill, similar to damage billing.
Each Student Receives Two Keys. Keep your extra
key in your campus office or in your car, give them to a
friend or neighbor, or put them anywhere else where they
will be safe and available to you if you lock yourself out.
( Note: DO NOT put them under a doormat, under a flowerpot,
or on top of the doorsill -burglars know these hiding places
far too well.)
When you move out, you must return all of the keys you
have received by the established deadline, or the apartment/room
will be rekeyed at your expense.
Staff Backup On Campus To Respond To Lockouts. Student
Housing Services staff will be on campus and available to
let you in from 8am to 8pm Monday through Friday, and weekends
from 9am to 5:30pm if you cannot find your keys and can
show your I.D. (See rate information above.)
Extended-Hours Professional Backup Available On Campus
If You Lock Yourself Out. For the duration of the infill
housing construction project, the roving security patrol
stationed in Escondido Village patrol Sunday through Thursday
from 8pm to midnight, and Friday and Saturday* from 5:30pm
to 2am will carry a pager. The patrol will let you into
your apartment/room if you lock yourself out and you cannot
find your keys. You must show your I.D to be let back into
your apartment/room. (See rate information below.) *Note
change in service hours to reflect the weekend as Friday
and Saturday.
Continued Emergency Backup To Respond To Lockouts During
Other Hours. Student Housing technicians are
on call at other hours and can come to campus from their
homes to let you in if you lock yourself out and you cannot
find your keys. You must show your I.D to be let back into
your apartment/room. (Callbacks are extremely costly
-see rate information below.)
Charges For Lockout Assistance: Having extra keys
should make paid lockout assistance very rarely necessary.
However, to help defray the costs of staffing for backup
assistance in the event you cannot find either your first
key or your extra key, the charges are the following:
- If you lose a key, report it immediately to the residence
office and your lock will be rekeyed.
- Your room/apartment will be rekeyed regardless of where
you lost the key, and you will be charged for the cost.
Computer
clusters
Your room is equipped with an ethernet jack, so you can
surf the web from your bedroom. An ethernet connection costs
$80 to turn on or to renew, or $40 if you just moved in
over the summer and want to continue the connection for
the next academic year. To submit a new/renewal/update request
form for an ethernet connection, go to the Residential
Computing Request Page.
Each residence has at least one computer clusters with
Macs, laser printers, and various software. Printing will
be charged to the University Debit Card System; set up your
print account see
Residential Computing's instruction page. If you have
any problems or questions, you can contact the
Residential Computer Coordinators.
Subletting
Your Apartment
Couples and families may sublet their assigned apartment
to someone else during summer quarter only. Single students
may not sublet their apartments to others at any time. Only
those who are affiliated with Stanford for the summer quarter
are eligible to sublet an Escondido Village (EV) couple
or family apartment from a resident. Affiliates include
those taking summer courses, working at Stanford, doing
research for a department or professor (not personal research)
or attending a conference. Students who took classes Spring
quarter and/or Autumn quarter, but not during summer are
not eligible to sublet.
Eligible students who would like to sublet their apartment
or find an apartment to sublet from someone else may visit
the EV office between March 15 and August 1 to advertise
their apartment's availability or their interest in subletting
an apartment. Students are invited to fill out an information
sheet to insert into the Sublet Binder which is kept on
the front counter of the EV Office during Spring and Summer
quarters. More information about
subletting is available at the EV office.
Reserving
a Meeting Room
Escondido Village, Rains, and Lyman have meeting rooms
that can be reserved by students who live in the residence.

(pots and pans, dishes, etc.) from the CCIS

The
Village Rental Coop
The Village
Rental Coop (VRC) is a place where people affiliated
with Stanford can rent items they might need for a very
low cost. These items include roll-a-way beds and foldable
mattresses for visitors they might host, camping equipment,
baby equipment, games and sports balls, steam cleaners and
vacuums, and a lot more. The Coop is open on Monday evenings
in the basement of Abrams in Escondido Village.
The VRC has been running since 1966, and even without much
publicity, in the past two years alone we've rented over
900 items to the Stanford community! Information on our
history, as well as a list of rental items and prices can
all be found on the Village
Rental Coop website.
The VRC is run completely by volunteers. Ideally, there
are ten Monday night volunteers who staff the rental center
in Abrams one night per month, and five board members.
Escondido Family
Fund
The Escondido Family Fund
was established in 1988 by a gift from anonymous donors
to provide rent subsidies to student families with two or
more children living in Escondido Village. Since funds are
limited, families with the greatest need will be funded
first. Applications for the
2006-2007 academic year are due Friday, June 23, 2006, 5pm.
Complete information about the
Escondido Family Fund is available in the EV office
or by calling (650) 723-1171.

Childcare
The University's primary source of information on childcare
is the WorkLife
Center. This office provides information and referral
services for families at Stanford and in the surrounding
communities. The center is a good source of information
about childcare resources, public and private schools, preschool
programs and after-school care. The Child Care Coordinator
for Palo Alto and The Community Coordinated Child Development
Council of Santa Clara County Inc. (known as the 4C's) offer
similar information and services.
