Lyman Apartments
You can see photos of a Lyman apartment on the Lyman
Community Associates' web site.
Each apartment is about 575 square feet and has its own
bathroom, living-dining room, kitchen, and storage closet.
All apartments are carpeted, except the kitchen and bathrooms,
where there is linoleum flooring. The bedroom are about
9 feet by 11 feet. See the floor plans and photos to get
an idea of what this looks like.
All apartments in Lyman are furnished with a stove, oven,
refrigerator, garbage disposal, pantry, sofa, coffee table,
breakfast table with two chairs, bookshelf, mini-blinds,
and shower curtain. Each bedroom has a twin extra long bed,
a desk and chair, a dresser, and a bookshelf.
"Furnished" means just the furniture and major appliances;
it does not mean things like pots, pans, dishes, microwaves,
phones, sheets, or pillows. In other words, you should bring
all of the really homey stuff that will make an apartment
your home.

Common Spaces
All of Lyman's common spaces are in the Lyman Common building,
located in between Buildings One and Three. The Common Building
is built around large wooden deck surrounding an immense
oak tree. With the exception of the Atrium Lounge, students'
apartment keys open all common spaces: the piano, laundry,
and computer rooms, plus the TV and sitting lounges.
The
Atrium Lounge holds up to 60 peoples and can be booked
for private functions. It is a large carpeted meeting room
with a high ceiling, couches, chairs and tables. Additional
folding chairs and tables are also available. Large glass
garage-style doors fold up into the ceiling, opening the
lounge onto the wooden deck of the commons.
The
Piano Room is a small music practice room with a
baby grand piano. It is located in Lyman Common Building,
Lyman residents can use the piano room on a first-come,
first-served basis.
The TV Lounge has several sofas, a tv and vcr. It
is located in the Lyman Common Building and is available
on a first-come, first-served basis.
The
Sitting Lounge, which is located in the Lyman Common
Building, can be used for meetings or as student study room.
It has tables and chairs that can accommodate up to 12 people.
The lounge is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Lyman
has two Barbecue Grills located outside of the Lyman
Common Building. They are available on a first-come, first-served
basis and cannot be reserved.

Computing
Each
bedroom in Lyman is connected to Stanford's computer network
through an ethernet jack. Lyman also has a computer cluster
in the Commons Building. It is equipped with Macintosh computers,
laser printers, and various software. Printing will be charged
to the University Debit Card System; to set up your print
account (see Residential Computing's instruction
page).
If you have any problems or questions, you can contact
the Lyman Residential Computer Coordinator (RCC), whose
name and e-mail address will be included on your welcome
packet. You can also consult the RCC
directory on the Residential Computing web site.
Your
room is wired with an Ethernet jack, so you can surf the
web from your bedroom. An Ethernet connection costs $80
to turn on or to renew, or $40 if you just moved in over
the summer and want to continue the connection for the next
academic year. To submit a new/ renewal/update request form
for an Ethernet connection, go to the Residential
Computing Request Page.

Room
Located
in the Lyman Common Building, there is a change machine
in the laundry room, which takes one- and five-dollar bills.
Be considerate and remove your laundry when it's done; abandoned
laundry is likely to be moved from the machines by your
impatient neighbors.

Recreation
Lyman
is located next to the golf driving range and across the
street from several tennis courts. Nearby is a hiking and
running trail that passes Lake Lagunita (pictured at right)
and extends into the Stanford foothills.

Storage
There is no storage space in Lyman (other than in your
apartment) either for personal belongings or unwanted furniture.
Maintenance will not remove and store beds or other Lyman
furniture. You have to store your unwanted furniture off-campus
at your own expense. If you choose to store your Lyman bed,
keep in mind that you are responsible for returning it in
good condition when you check out. If you store Lyman furniture
from any common area, your roommate must agree that it's
ok, since it is his furniture as well and you are jointly
liable for anything missing or damaged.
Lyman
is currently the only graduate residence with covered bicycle
corrals. These are two of these locked, fenced bicycle enclosures
at Lyman to store your bicycle in a dry and secure place.
