| Located on the Row, Fraternities and Sororities offer group
activities ranging from work to play to community service.
Once you pledge to a residential fraternity or sorority, you are required to live in the house and pay all required fees according to the individual House Preference Program for your fraternity or sorority. Below are housing requirements for members of residential Fraternities and Sororities. If you are interested in learning more about the Greek system, you are encouraged to visit the Office of Student Activities on the second floor of Tresidder Union or consult the OSA Web site at: http://osa.stanford.edu/greek/. If you are interested in boarding at a fraternity or sorority as a non-member, you should contact the house president.
Fraternity/Sorority Rush and Assignment Information
Assignment to residential fraternities and sororities is
made through Fraternity/Sorority Rush. If you accept
a bid to a residential fraternity or sorority, you may not
enter the Draw unless you have not been offered a space
in the house according to the chapter Housing Preference
Policy (HPP). If you do not receive a bid or if you
decide not to accept a bid, you may still enter the Draw
by the May 4, 2008, Draw deadline.

While all residential fraternities and sororities are part of University housing, each house is self-governing, sets its own budget, and admits its own members. Consequently, questions about the particular costs, work requirements, facilities, and pledging and initiation requirements for each house should be addressed to house members or house officers.
Housing Terms and Costs for Fraternity and Sorority Members
A preferred/guaranteed year of housing is automatically used when you live in a fraternity or sorority whether as a member or non-member boarder. Fraternity and sorority members use a guaranteed/not preferred year if they enter the Draw or join the Waiting List. Housed fraternities and sororities are responsible for providing guaranteed housing to their members and are required to fill 100% of their housing spaces with members. Members who do not wish to continue living in the fraternity or sorority should consult with their fraternity/sorority president before applying for Upperclass Housing. You may jeopardize your fraternity/sorority's housed status if you do not live in the house.
UPDATE: Due to a glitch in the Housing Assignments system, preferred years have not been taken at the time a student pledges for the last few years. To rectify this, we will be removing all preferred years as soon as a student pledges a house starting with the students who pledge Spring 2008 and live in the house 2008-09, . This brings our proceedures in line with the policy stated in the Residence Agreement for the past several years.. These students will not be allowed to enter the draw with a preferred draw number during their Junior or Senior years. Earlier pledge classes will continue to draw as they have the last few years.
Officers of fraternities and sororities are responsible for the collection and payment of all debts incurred by the group. With the approval of the Assistant Director for Row Residential Staff, officers may place a hold on the enrollment of any student who owes more than $50 to the house. If you wish to appeal a hold, you should contact the Assistant Director for Row Residential Staff at the Row Office, 723-0778. Each student who pledges a fraternity or sorority signs
a Greek Membership Form which includes the following:
I am accepting a bid to join a residential Greek organization.
By so doing:
- I understand that I am not eligible to enter the 2008
Undergraduate Housing Draw, unless released by my chapter
in accordance with their Housing Preference Policy.
- I relinquish all claims to guaranteed/preferred years
in the Undergraduate Draw system and understand that
my remaining guaranteed housing will be provided by
my chapter.
- I am aware that I may be pulled back into the house
from my on campus draw assignment if my chapter falls
below its occupancy.
- I understand that if I deactivate or depledge that
I may be subject to one quarter's, or pro-ration thereof,
house board operational cost and rent.
- I understand that if I deactivate or depledge that
I would be allowed to access my guaranteed year of housing
and be assigned in the Draw system. However, this would
be considered a late application and would result in
a late Draw application number.
- I understand that senior pledges cannot be considered
in the house occupancy total and are only given housing
as a boarder.
- I have read and understand my chapters Housing
Preference Policy.
- I agree to abide by the Residence and the Supplemental
House Agreement.
- I have been made aware of my chapter's "University
Status Report" and understand copies are available
from the chapter, the Office of Student Activities and
the Row Office
Note: If a housed fraternity or sorority fails to meet its membership requirements during Rush, the house may be included in the Draw as a University-assigned residence. Prospective members should consult directly with the fraternity or sorority or the Fraternal Affairs Advisor of the Office of Student Activities regarding the fraternity/sorority's status.
