Procedures for a Winter Post-Graduation Quarter

Procedures for a Spring Post-Graduation Quarter

Procedures for a Summer Post-Graduation Quarter

Students living in University housing (including fraternities, sororities and University-assigned off-campus apartment complexes) must be enrolled as Stanford students during each quarter of occupancy. An exception to this policy may be made upon approval of this petition for students who wish to remain in University housing for one quarter immediately following degree conferral as long as all enrolled students can be accommodated.

If your terminal degree is conferred at the end of autumn, winter or spring term, you may petition to remain in University housing while non-enrolled for one term immediately after degree conferral. Petitions are approved on the condition that all enrolled students can be accommodated.  The University, at its discretion, may approve or deny all or a portion of a given population (e.g. undergraduate female, couple without children), based on projected demand.  In the event that not all petitions are approved, priority will be based on date of receipt by Housing Assignments and reason for staying.

Petitions are considered for students who wish to remain non-enrolled Winter Quarter or Spring Quarter. Post-Graduation Quarter petitions are not granted for Autumn Quarter due to the housing demand from enrolled applicants.

Eligibility. In order to remain in University housing as a non-enrolled student you must:

  1. be an enrolled matriculated Stanford student during the term preceeding your request,
  2. currently live in a University residence,
  3. be in good academic and financial standing with the University, and
  4. have your degree conferred by the first Thursday of the quarter in which you will be non-enrolled (your graduation quarter). (Please note: Degree conferral is distinct from the awarding of a diploma, which only occurs during Commencement).
You are not eligible to live in University housing as an non-enrolled student if you will be auditing classes or working on an honor's thesis, honor's project, dissertation*, or any outstanding incompletes that must be completed before your degree can be conferred. If you are engaged in such academic work, but will not be taking classes, you may petition at the Registrar's Office for the appropriate registration status at a reduced fee (usually a Permit To Attend for undergraduates or Terminal Graduate Registration for graduate students). As a enrolled student, you will be able to continue in occupancy in University housing.

Conditions. If your Post-Graduation Quarter petition is approved and you move out before the end of the quarter, you remain liable for the rent for the entire term. A Post-Graduation Quarter grants a housing extension for the entire quarter, not a portion. There are no exceptions to this policy! All terms and conditions of the Residence Agreement apply during your occupancy. Your post-graduation quarter is for one quarter only. You must file a Termination of Occupancy Card by the deadline and move off campus at the end of your term of occupancy in a graduation quarter.

The approval of this petition is contingent upon successful completion of your coursework requirements during the current academic quarter and conferral of your degree by the first Thursday of your post-graduation quarter. If this petition is approved and your degree is not conferred by the first Thursday of your post-graduation quarter, you will be required to register or terminate occupancy (move out) immediately.

Eligibility requirements are subject to verification by Housing Assignments. Therefore, if there is a change in your registration/graduation status, please contact Housing Assignments as soon as possible.

• Procedures if you graduate at the end of Autumn Quarter 2007-08. This petition should be returned to Housing Assignments by Friday, October 26, 2007.

Upon approval of this petition, you may stay in housing through Winter Quarter. If you will not be enrolled for SPRING Quarter, you must also file a Termination of Occupancy on line by February 8, 2008. This officially notifies your Housing Front Desk and Housing Assignments that you are moving out of housing at the end of Winter Quarter. If you fail to file a termination by February 8, you will be charged a $100 to $200 late fee, depending on the date the termination is filed. Your contract is NOT automatically terminated at the end of Winter Quarter in case you begin a new degree program in the spring, therefore, you MUST file the termination by this deadline if you will not be enrolled spring term.

If this petition is denied, you must EITHER move out at the end of Autumn Quarter (you will be given a new deadline to file the termination without a late fee) OR register as a student for Winter Quarter in order to remain in housing.

• Procedures if you graduate at the end of Winter Quarter 2007-08. This petition should be returned to Housing Assignments by Friday, February 8, 2008.

Upon approval of this petition, you may stay in housing through Spring Quarter. If you will not be enrolled for SUMMER Quarter, students living in Crothers Memorial, Escondido Village and Rains (except academic year contracts), Lyman, and Rains must also file a Termination of Occupancy form on line by May 2, 2008. This officially notifies your Housing Front Desk and Housing Assignments that you are moving out of housing at the end of Spring Quarter. If you fail to file a termination form by May 4 will be charged a $100 to $200 late fee, depending on the date the termination form is filed. Your contract is NOT automatically terminated at the end of Spring Quarter (in case you begin a new degree program in the summer, therefore, you MUST file the termination form by this deadline if you will not be enrolled summer term.

Students living in residences that are on the academic year contract (Undergraduate housing, Crothers Hall, Escondido Village and Rains with academic year contracts, or Schwab) do not need to file a termination form to move out at the end of Spring Quarter because their contracts expire automatically at the end of Spring Quarter.

If this petition is denied, you must EITHER move out at the end of Winter Quarter (you will be given a new deadline to file the termination form without a late fee) OR register for Spring Quarter in order to remain in housing.

• Procedures if you graduate at the end of Spring Quarter 2007-08. Housing Assignments does not requires a petition to remain in housing for the Summer Quarter.

You will need to apply for Summer Housing if you want to remain on campus until August 17, 2008 if you live in Undergraduate housing, Escondido Village or Rains academic year contracts, Schwab or Crothers Hall. If you live anywhere else on campus, your housing contract already expires August 17, 2008.

* Graduate students working on a dissertation may be eligible for a Vacation Quarter - an entire quarter to live in University housing as a non-enrolled student - if they have been enrolled for three consecutive quarters, including Summer Quarter. A separate petition is required for a vacation quarter.
