CONTINUE TO CHECK THIS PAGE THROUGHOUT THE DRAW SEASON FOR
CHANGES AND UPDATES
Capital Improvement and Building Projects
The University is in the middle of a Capital Improvement Program of existing residence halls, including substantial renovations, seismic strengthening, asbestos abatement, and lead paint management. Stanford's Capital Improvement Program (CIP), new construction, other major University construction projects or unforeseen repair projects will necessarily cause increased noise around directly involved and nearby residences, as well as throughout other housing areas. Prior to and up to a year after a major construction project, continual work may occur in and around your residence. While all possible measures will be taken to minimize the impact of all of these housing projects, any student moving into these areas should be prepared to accept the unavoidable aspects of life in a neighborhood under construction.
These are the large renovation and building projects scheduled for the upcoming year:
* Xanadu House is going through CIP this summer and autumn of 2008. The house will be available for occupancy in January, 2009. There will be construction noise and workers in the area during the construction project.
* The construction of the new Munger Residences will continue throughout the 2008-09 year. Completion of the project is planned for Autumn Quarter of 2010 although some buildings may come up earlier. This construction will affect students in Stern and Wilbur Halls along with Phi Psi and Mars. There is a web site to keep you informed of work going on at Munger. It is http://mungerhousing.stanford.edu/currentconstruction.html
*For the future Bob House will be renovated in the summer of 2009.
Changes in Residence Configurations
* Trancos will not have any freshmen assigned to the residence for the coming year. We will assign about 20 transfer students to the residence (the rest will continue to be assigned to Kimball Hall.) This has been done so that Burbank can remain an all Frosh residence for the coming year.
* Serra and Casa Zapata in Stern Hall will be returning to their pre-Munger construction configurations during 2008-09. For the past 2 years the rooms on the construction side of Serra and Casa Zapata have been assigned as singles. The rooms on the construction side of Casa Zapata will revert to 1 room doubles starting Autumn Quarter 2008. The rooms on the construction side of Serra will revert to 1 room doubles starting Winter Quarter 2008.
Changes in Special Priority Houses
* Castano and Lantana will no longer be priority residences for 2008-09. Residential Education will be exploring the possibility that these will once again become focus houses in future years.
* Kimball Hall is working towards establishing itself as an Arts Academic Theme House for the 2009-10 academic year. As a test/pilot for this endeavor, faculty members within Arts Department(s) will be able to select up to 12 Academic Theme Associates for the 2008-09 year in addition to the Focus Assistants normally selected. This means that Kimball will have elements of both a Focus house and Academic theme house for this year. If Stanford does not move ahead with establishing an Arts Academic theme house in Kimball, the house will revert to a focus house for 2009-10.
Changes in Applying and Receiving Information about the Draw
*All students who wish to participate in the Draw, or get a first round draw number (preferred or non-preferred) must have their applications in by Sunday, May 4 at 6:00 PM. Students who apply by the May 4 deadline will receive their draw numbers at their residences after 5:00 PM on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 (posted in Axess by 8:00 AM on Thursday, May 8) and will have until 6:00 PM on Sunday, May 11 to change their residence choices. Any applications received after May 4 will not be eligible for first round draw numbers and will not be considered until later assignment rounds.
* Group retention will default to the highest level (keep me with my group through all 16 choices.) Students will need to actively go in to change to a different level of retention.
*Students can now list up to 16 residence choices on their applications.
* We will be open from 1:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2008 and Sunday, May 11, 2008 to help you with last-minute questions about applying or entering final edits into your applications after the draw numbers are announced.
Changes in Responding to Housing Assignments
* Students will no longer need to respond to their housing assignments in Axess after results are announced. Everyone will accept the residence agreement when they submit their applications in Axess. Any student who no longer needs housing is responsible for contacting the Housing Assignments office in writing (housingassignments@lists.stanford.edu) to withdraw their application or cancel their assignment. This will cost between $50 and $400 depending on the date of withdrawl/cancellation. Students who do not cancel their assignments, and do not show up in the designated move in date will have their assignment cancelled and will be charged a $400 no-show fee.
*Students who are assigned during the draw, but wish to seek reassignment to a different residence during the Autumn Waiting list, will still need to log into Axess between May 24 and July 11 to join the waiting list for reassignment. This is done on the "View Assignments" page in Axess.
Gender Neutral Housing Pilot Project
* A gender neutral housing pilot project is being introduced in four diverse undergraduate housing locations; Mirrielees, Castano, Narnia and Terra. If interested in this option, you will enter the Draw as usual and list any or all of these housing choices. Once you are assigned to one of these locations, you are able to select a roommate of another gender who was also assigned to the house through the in-house draw process. There is additional information on the Gender Neutral Housing information page. Random students of different genders who do not know each other will not be assigned to the same room. This process is not intended for romantic couples because these students can apply for "Couples without Children" housing through a defined process.
Support for Transgender students
* The Gender Neutral Housing Pilot project was developed in part to help transgendered students. Transgender students can either use the option available above or can apply to housing through a confidential process. In order to provide support to transgendered students who, for whatever reason, need special accommodations due to gender identity/expression, Stanford Student Housing needs to know that a student requires such accommodations. Current and incoming students with concerns of any kind relating to their gender identity/expression are urged to identify themselves to Housing Assignments staff. Staff will not ask for more information than is required to meet students' housing needs and all disclosed information will be kept strictly confidential.
Reminder
- Application process for students with disabilities and
their group members
*All students applying for housing through the Disability
Draw (including group members) will need to enter a housing
application in Axess or on paper at Housing Assignments
by April 23, 2008. Students, including group members, who
have not submitted an application will NOT be considered
for special accommodation.
*If a student with a disability is assigned to an undergraduate
residence that requires a meal plan, an additional meal
plan must be purchased for a live-in attendant.
Reminder - Applying
for Housing on Axess
To enter the Draw for Autumn Quarter or to receive a first-round random application number for the Winter or Spring
Quarter Waiting List, applications must be submitted completely
by Sunday, May 4, 2008 at 6:00 p.m.
(Check the Calendar for subsequent
Waiting List deadlines.) Do not wait until the last day
to apply. Due to high demand on the Axess servers,
there may be a lengthy waiting time to use Axess, and
you might not meet the deadline. Axess will close at
6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2008 even if you are
in the middle of a session. If you miss the deadline,
petitions to receive a random application number or to change
your choices will not be considered, so plan accordingly!
Students who apply by the May 4 deadline will recieve their draw numbers on May 7 at their Housing Front Desks, and May 8 in Axess. They will then have until May 11, 2008 at 6:00 PM to edit residence choices, group retention and final choice.
