He is one of the leading scholars of Classicism, Romanticism, fin de siècle and Weimar culture. Questions of literary theory, aesthetics, and myth stand in the forefront of his research. His recent publications explore the interrelations of text and image, literary constructions of the foreign, and the cultural history of vertigo. He has held visiting positions in Bochum, Sydney, Naples and Fes (Morocco), as well as at the University of Kansas and the University of Pennsylvania.
