FAQ's ON STANFORD GRADUATE STUDENT FINANCIAL SUPPORT
1. I need help understanding my University bill.
Student Financial Services (SFS) manages the students'
billing and payment processes. They debit accounts with charges from various offices such
as the Registrar for tuition, Housing and Dining Services, ASSU, etc., and credit the bill
with financial support such as loans, fellowships, tuition allowance, Cardinal Care subsidies, etc.
2. I have received my University Bill for the upcoming quarter,
but it does not reflect all the financial support I'm expecting. How do I check the status of the
various funds? Or who should I contact?
- For
fellowships or assistantships through Stanford, contact
your home department.
- For fellowship funds Stanford's Financial Aid Office
receives for you from an outside agency, check the status in Axess > Finances
Tab > View Outside Awards.
- For funding for which Stanford bills an organization or government,
contact Student Financial Services. These are called
Third Party Contracts.
- For
loan funds which are administered through the Financial Aid Office, go
to Axess > View Financial Aid > Scheduled Disbursements.
3. I have received notice of my loan eligibility but
the loans do not appear as credits on my University bill.
If you have loans offered in Axess > Award Package which you have
not accepted, go to financialaid.stanford.edu.
under loan processing
to review the steps you need to take in order to secure loan funds.
4. I have not received notification of my eligibility for loans. Is
it too late to apply?
If there are no loans in Axess > Award Package, the quarter has begun
and it's been more than six weeks since you've completed the application documents, (see application
instructions under Graduate Students > Applying for Financial Aid) notify the Financial Aid Office
via email at financialaid@stanford.edu.
If you have not started the application process for loans, instructions are available at:
http://www.stanford.edu/dept/finaid/graduate/3_3_apply.html.
Although graduate students may apply for student loans any time before the end of the quarter for
which the funds are being requested, applications received less than six weeks before the payment
due date will be considered late. The FAO will make every effort to notify students who have applied
on time of their eligibility before the beginning of the quarter and will consider late applications
as time permits.
The filing deadlines for 2007-2008 are:
Autumn quarter: September 1, 2007
Winter quarter: December 1, 2007
Spring quarter: March 1, 2008
Summer quarter: June 1, 2008
5. Where is the Financial Aid Office FAO? Where is SFS?
The FAO is

Frances Arrillaga Alumni Center. You can contact the FAO by phone at (650) 723-3058; toll-free at (888) 326-3773; or by
email at financialaid@stanford.edu.
SFS is located at the Maude Modular at 632 Serra Street, Suite 160. You can submit
questions to SFS via the HelpSU at http://helpsu.stanford.edu. Please use Request
Category: Student Services and Request Type: University Bill/Student Account.
You may also call SFS at (650) 723-2181.
6. What are my obligations for the funds I accept through
the FAO (student loans and federal work-study)?
Immediately notify the FAO if you:
- Enroll in fewer units than were used to establish your eligibility (See
QUARTERLY Cost of Attendance in AXESS).
- Receive funds in addition to any listed as "Estimated" under the Financial
Support column of your award notification from the FAO and reflected in AXESS. Examples: internal or external fellowships,
tuition allowance, health insurance subsidy, stipends of any kind including support for research
costs, conference attendance, etc.;
- Move to on-campus housing during the award period.
Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress as outlined in the University Bulletin, and complete the minimum units required for your program.
If notified, comply with the FAO's request for supporting documentation of application data as part of the University's responsibilities under the Federal Quality Assurance program.
If you are receiving federal loans and/or work-study, financial support from all sources cannot exceed the cost of attendance (see AXESS
for these amounts). Differences may result in the redistribution, reduction or cancellation of
funds administered by the FAO. You may be required to reimburse funds already disbursed.
7. I have heard about a Grant-In-Aid for graduate students.
How do I get more information and apply?
Grant-In-Aid funds may be available to doctoral students (Ph.D.,
Ed.D., D.M.A.) in the Schools of Earth Science, Education, Engineering, Humanities and
Sciences and Medicine (PhD program). Students applying must have basic support covered by
another source. Preference is given to students who are making satisfactory academic progress
or are advanced in their program, and have an expected degree completion date.
Applications are encouraged from students experiencing unanticipated financial hardship due to
medical or family circumstances which can't be resolved with fellowship or loan funding.
The application and further details about the application and notification process are
available here.
8. How can I communicate with the Financial Aid Office?
The FAO will communicate with you via your primary email address in AXESS. Additionally,
