Tuition and Budget
The standard graduate student expense budget is the basis for determining eligibility for
student aid funds administered by the Financial Aid Office, including Federal and private
loans, and Federal Work-Study (FWS).
The budget applies to the typical Stanford graduate student: unmarried and attending full-time
for autumn, winter, and spring quarters of the academic year. Individual room and board charges,
book, supply, and personal expenses may vary somewhat from the standard budget estimates. The
cost of education on which loans and work-study are based includes the expense categories listed
below as well as tuition charges.
Budgets will differ if a student's attendance or enrolled units varies from the standard below; the student is married; and/or the student has dependent children. For information on
graduate student housing options, refer to the website of the Housing Assignments Office.
Tuition charges for graduate students depend on the school and number of enrolled units.
Full-time for many students will be 8-10 units per quarter while for others it may be in
excess of 10 units per quarter. The best source of information about typical enrollment
patterns for a particular program is the academic department. Since quarterly charges will
depend on the enrollment and program. Use the tuition rate information available on the website
of the Registrar's
Office for planning. Tuition charges listed below reflect the School of Humanities and Sciences, Education and Earth Sciences only.

The cost of Cardinal Care health insurance for 2008-09 is $756 per quarter. The insurance subsidy provided by the University or School will be considered a
resource reducing the costs of education. Information on the University subsidy is available
here.
Some schools or programs may provide partial subsidy. Contact your academic department for
those details.
Tax Information
All students and fellows receiving financial support from Stanford must have a U.S. Social Security number or I.T.I.N. (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) and a tax data form on file with the University. All funds disbursed to students and fellows by the University are subject to federal and state income tax.
Degree-seeking students can exclude as non-taxable the portion of their fellowship funding which is applied to tuition and course related expenses. Course-related expenses include ASSU fees, required health insurance, and books/supplies.
Tax forms to file at the end of the calendar year with the IRS and California Franchise Tax Board:
- U.S. citizens and residents should file the federal Form 1040 and the state Form 540.
- Non-resident aliens should file the federal Form 1040-NR and the state Form 540. (Non-resident aliens are considered residents by the state of California for tax reporting purposes.)
Simpler versions of tax forms such as the 1040A, 1040EZ, and 1040NR-EZ may be used when circumstances permit. For more information or to download forms go to IRS and
California State.
