Graduating
Prior to graduating, if you have a federal Stafford loan you must complete an exit counseling requirement. Contact the Financial Aid Office for details on how to complete this requirement.
If you have a federal Perkins Loan, you
must contact the Student Financial Services Office for exit counseling.
In general, the grace period for Federal Stafford, Federal PLUS, SNAP, GATE and University Loans is six months, and the grace period for Federal Perkins Loans is nine months. Leaving Stanford without college enrollment elsewhere for longer than six or nine months will require students to begin repayment of these loans.
Leave of Absence (For a Term Other Than Summer Quarter)
Students must notify appropriate offices of your planned leave according to current polices described in the Stanford Bulletin. Students must file a Leave of Absence form with the Registrar's Office. Offices to notify include, but are not limited to, Student Financial Services, Housing Assignment Services, and the Financial Aid Office. Also, you'll need to update your address in Axess.
Notify the Financial Aid Office in writing which quarter(s) you will not be enrolled and when you anticipate returning. Your aid package will be adjusted to reflect your leave status. If you notify the Financial Aid Office in advance of the quarter(s) that you are taking a leave of absence, you may apply that period's scholarship or grant eligibility to a future quarter in the same academic year (e.g., summer quarter.) Failure to indicate when you anticipate your return will result in cancellation of your aid for the remainder of the academic year.
If you file for a leave of absence before the first day of classes, your charges and financial aid will be canceled for the quarter. Cases where students take a leave of absence after the first day of classes and are partially charged for a quarter by the Registrar's Office will require further review to determine the amount of aid for which a student may be eligible.
Students who register as Permit to Attend (PTA) or Permit for Services Only (PSO)
do not qualify for financial aid. Students under either PTA or PSO registration
status must notify the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible, and should be
aware that the grace period for their loan repayment will begin during this time.
Notify your lenders and loan servicing agencies of your change in enrollment status. You may be required to complete an exit counseling requirement.

Financial aid application materials for the upcoming academic year are available beginning in January, with a filing deadline in April. Make certain to meet all aid application deadlines if you want to be considered for aid for the next academic year, even if you are away from campus when applications are due. (Students leaving the University for a year or longer will be subject to the aid policies in effect when they return.)
Make certain all holds on your student record are cleared and any student loans
are not in default. Students are advised to contact the Financial Aid Office
as soon as they consider returning and must submit a Returning Student's Request
to Register form to the Registrar's Office one month prior to the first day of
classes for the applicable quarter to be eligible to enroll.
