Undergraduates may have to enroll for a minimum of 12 units each quarter to be eligible for any type of financial aid, including loans. Students who register as Permit to Attend (PTA) or Permit for Services Only (PSO) do not qualify for financial aid, including loans. Students under either PTA or PSO registration status must notify the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible, and should be aware that the grace period for their loans will begin during this time. The Financial Aid Office may request information or documentation in addition to standard application requirements in order to make a thorough evaluation of your application. You and your parents are urged to respond promptly and completely to such requests in order to avoid delays in award notification and fund disbursement. Award notices are usually sent to continuing students beginning in August. Please note that financial aid awards are not automatically renewed: students must reapply each year and provide all required documents by the stated deadlines to assure financial aid consideration. Applications submitted after the filing deadline will be processed and awards made as time and funds permit, and may include higher than standard levels of self-help (job and loan). California residents who would be financially eligible for a Cal Grant, and did not receive one for the current academic year, will be sent a notice to file the FAFSA by March 2, 2008. Students receiving this notice must also submit the California Student Aid Commission's GPA Verification Form included with the notice. California residents who do currently receive a Cal Grant, can use the April 15 deadline to file the FAFSA, and do not need to complete a new GPA Verification Form. California residents who apply for a Cal Grant but are denied should submit the letter of rejection from the California Student Aid Commission to the FAO; in some cases, the FAO can appeal the decision. International students admitted without financial aid are expected to fully fund their studies while at Stanford, financial aid will not be available in later years. Stanford cannot assume financial responsibility for international economic factors such as currency fluctuations in determining financial aid. And, Stanford cannot make up foregone resources such as lost support from friends or relatives, or a student's decision to decline outside aid (e.g., government or company scholarships). International students who receive scholarship support in excess of tuition and fees may have to pay U.S. and California state income taxes on that portion of their award. If you are subject to this taxation (international students may or may not be subject to this, depending on tax treaties with various countries), Stanford is required to submit the estimated amount of tax directly to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on your behalf. This federal tax liability appears as a charge on your university bill. You are encouraged to file a US income tax return as soon as you receive your US tax statement 1042S for taxable scholarships and your W2 forms for wages earned. California state income is fully taxable, and the university does not withhold state taxes on your behalf. You are expected to file a California return and may or may not be eligible for a tax refund. A U.S. Social Security number is required for all international students to receive scholarship funds. Students applying for undergraduate financial consideration past 12 quarters of attendance must submit an Undergraduate Academic Plan. Stanford does not consider applicants for scholarship funds if they attend past twelve quarters in order to complete a minor, double major, dual, BAS or co-terminal degree; students in these cases may apply for Graduate Student Loan and Federal Work Study. Stanford usually awards scholarships and grants for three quarters of the academic year. Financial aid for summer quarter will depend on the availability of funds and will likely be in the form of an earnings expectation and loan. Applications for students requesting aid for summer quarter may be printed from the Forms section of this website after May 1. |
