General Charge

The goal of the Outdoor Art Panel is to further develop the excellent collection of sculpture from the modern era. In conjunction with the other collections of the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University (Stanford University Museum of Art), the University’s outdoor art will continue to serve as a primary resource for teaching and research in visual arts, and for the aesthetic education of the Stanford community.

The Outdoor Art Panel is charged with the responsibility for developing proposals for the acquisition, or creation, of significant works of outdoor art (freestanding sculpture, wall reliefs, and major fountains or plazas), reviewing proposals from other sources and making recommendations to the President for specific acquisitions and their placement on the Stanford campus.

The areas of focus for the Panel shall include:

  1. assessing the aesthetic quality and importance of works being considered
  2. consideration of sitting of works of art and their impact on their "neighbors"
  3. consideration of costs of acquisition and development of resources for acquisitions
  4. creation of a program for documentation of the creation and installation of new works
  5. development of an ongoing program of maintenance and conservation of the outdoor art collection
  6. development of an ongoing program of educational use of the outdoor art collection

Membership

The Panel and its chair both, to be appointed by the President, shall include seven voting members composed as follows:

The terms of membership shall be for three years, excluding the student members who will be appointed for one year, with a preference that they be reappointed to a second one year term. Appointments shall be effective October 1 of the year of appointment and ending September 30 of the third year.

Meetings

The Panel shall normally meet once a quarter during the academic year and as required by business.

Staff Support

The Director of the Museum is responsible for providing staff and secretarial assistance to the Panel.

Reports

The Chairman of the Panel shall submit an annual report of its discussions, action, and recommendation to the President of the university, no later than August 1.
