In literature of the long eighteenth century reason went to war with feeling as modes of defining individual and communal identity. At stake in this battle was the role and place of the imagination in evolving commercial society. In this course we will we will trace the mind’s precarious relation to madness in philosophical texts, poetry, satire, novels, biography, painting, and film––from John Locke through Jane Austen.
