| Stanford Drama continues to have a wide-ranging influence on theater scholarship. Graduates of the Stanford Drama Department are changing the direction of theater. They are having an impact on the curricular emphasis across the country by teaching in leading universities. They are serving as managers, artistic directors, and professional artists in prominent theaters. Their books are widely published. They speak at major theater conferences. Drama students and faculty have a history of featuring prominently in theater scholarship around the nation. Here's one example of our continuing tradition: Professor Norman Philbrick, Executive Head of the department in the 1950s, became the first Stanford editor of Educational Theatre Journal, the predecessor of today's Theatre Journal, which was later edited by an alumnus of our Ph.D. program, John Rouse, who was succeeded in turn by Janelle Reinelt, also an alumna of our program. Harry Elam follows in this tradition as Co-Editor since May 2002. Stanford Drama faculty serve on the editorial boards of Theatre Journal, Comparative Drama, The Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, Performing Arts Journal, and The Brecht Yearbook. Each of these journals holds more contributions from Stanford Drama alumni than from alumni of any other single department or program. (Not bad, eh?)
