Diversity and Access Office

Mission and Goals

Mission

The primary mission of the Diversity & Access Office (D&A) is twofold:

  1. To advance Stanford University's affirmative action goals and commitment to diversity, and to ensure that Stanford employees and prospective members of the institution are not discriminated against because of race, color, age, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, or medical condition.

  2. To coordinate and monitor campus compliance with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. This includes providing guidance and evaluating efforts to improve access to campus facilities and programs as well as advising staff, faculty, and visitors regarding disability accommodations.

In addition, the office provides the following services:

  • Information, consultation, and resources for issues relating to the provisions of Title IX of the Education Amendments Act, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), and affirmative action policy.

  • Facilitated training programs on diversity.

The Diversity & Access Office's mission is based on the following principles:

  • Diversity is not defined exclusively by race or gender. It extends to age, sex, sexual orientation, veterans status, physical and mental ability, national origin or ancestry.

  • A commitment to diversity is a commitment to all employees.

  • Diversity among staff, students and faculty offers Stanford an opportunity to realize its excellence.

  • Affirmative action is one method of including historically underrepresented populations into the workforce. Therefore, Stanford must maintain human resource information systems and develop an institutional philosophy based on the principles and ideals of affirmative action and an appreciation of a diverse workforce where members are able to succeed according to their abilities.

  • Managers and supervisors and Human Resource personnel must examine how their current management and information systems operate and contribute to the leadership and skills development of staff and the University's affirmative action goals.

  • The commitment to diversity must be shared by all Stanford administration, faculty and staff.

Goals

D&A has as its goals:

  • To collect, monitor, report and analyze major personnel data regarding the hiring, promotion and retention of women and minorities (African-American, Asian-American, Native American, Hispanic), as required by federal law as well as for University purposes.

  • To provide advice and resources to all staff members of minority populations, including disabled, lesbian, gay and bisexual persons, according to mission and goals.

  • To provide assistance and counsel to Vice Presidents and Provosts, Department Chairs, Human Resources Officers, administrative units, and other staff on matters regarding affirmative action and diversity issues.
