About Us

The medieval and early modern periods are fundamental points of departure for understanding the genealogy of the modern world: its political language and institutions, its religious divisions, its global interconnections, and its cultural preoccupations. A fuller understanding of these eras can provide a valuable perspective on the complex history of and current challenges facing today's global society.

The Stanford Center for Medieval and Early Mocern Studies aims to create an multidisciplinary umbrella structure that can:

  • integrate medieval and early modern projects already at Stanford into broader curricular and programmatic contexts, thereby offering them greater visibility and impact
  • generate new initiatives to advance research and teaching on medieval and early modern subjects from genuinely multidisciplinary perspectives
  • discover new approaches to the medieval and early modern periods that reflect the uniqueness of Stanford's intellectual resources and global position: favoring long perspectives on historical change, broad geographic foci both inside and outside the traditional boundaries of western Europe, and dynamic applications of research methodologies, from archival to electronic
  • establish Stanford at the center of a West Coast-based scholarly community of medieval and early modern specialists that is actively rethinking the shape of these fields in light of today's changing educational, technological, and global environments
  • build graduate and undergraduate student cohorts, while also stimulating new student research and training opportunities
  • produce new publications that will showcase the Center's achievements and establish Stanford's presence in scholarly medieval and early modern studies
  • cultivate a major online presence by developing research tools and resources that will expand the center's national and international influence
  • partner with community members and secondary school teachers to create select programs and projects with broad interest and appeal outside the academy
