CLASSGEN 225 • Metamorphoses of Dido
Alessandro Schiesaro
We will focus on Dido in Virgil (Aeneid 1 and 4), and try both to understand the complexities of her characterization and its bearing on an overall view of the poem. Specific attention will be devoted to Dido's scant previous appearances, and abundant intertextual models.
The second part of the seminar will focus on Dido's continuing fascination on later authors, from Ovid to the XXth century. Among several possible topics -Latin and Christian authors, medieval rewritings, Chaucer, Marlowe, Dido in music and painting etc.- we will select, as time allows, those closest to the participants' interests."
