CLASSART 61 • Introduction to Greek Archaeology
Ulrike Krotscheck
This course examines the material remains of Greek civilization, including architecture, art, and written sources, and pursues the question of what these remains tell us about ancient society and culture. We will begin with the Palace societies of the Bronze Age, discuss the Archaic Age of colonization and the rise of the Polis, examine the beginnings of Classical Athenian democracy, and end with the conquests of Alexander the Great. How do we interpret the monuments, art, and historical documents left behind? What do they tell us about the world of the Greeks, and what do they tell us about current western civilization? How has reception of the Classical past influenced our own political and social development, for better and for worse?
