Lecture notes from Week 10 added

Salve omnes!

Congratulations on making to week 10! We’ve just uploaded files from the end of last week and this week.

  • You’ll find lecture slides from March 3, 5, and 10th under the Schedule and Readings page.
  • We’ve also uploaded notes from breakout session 5 for your reference, as well.
  • Glory Liu’s paper on the “Uses and Abuses of Myron’s Discobolos” is under the heading for March 10th.

More to come as the quarter wraps up, so keep your eyes posted!

LOTS of new materials added– updated!

Salve Omnes,

We hope you enjoyed this last unit’s exciting mix of chariots, gladiators, and archaeology! At least for me (Glory, your out-of-sight webmaster), I could watch Gladiator again this weekend…

We’ve uploaded a bunch of files for your reference and knowledge.  On the Schedule and Readings Page, you will find…

  • Lecture slides from February 10th onward, under the corresponding date
  • Notes and audio files of breakout sessions 2, 3, and 4.  To access the audio files, you’ll need to provide your SUnet ID and password– we’ve uploaded them to a fancy box account because they’re large files!
  • Videos– Links to watch The Emperor’s Gift and Gladiators Back from the Dead are nested under February 17th and February 24th, respectively, on the Schedule and Readings page. You’ll also need to log in with your SUnet ID to access the files.
  • Sample reading response papers— exemplary papers by three of your peers, posted on the Discussions page.

Finally, you can read about requirements and details of the Unit 4 Assignment (a paper or class project) in the attached PDF.  You can read an example of an excellent project here: Ashley Westhem’s submission, which is an interview with an Australian Olympian that compares and contrasts a modern Olympic athlete’s regimen and Olympic mindset with that of the Ancient Greeks!

Please feel free to reach out to the teaching team if you have any questions about the assignment.

New Materials added

Salve Omnes,

We’ve just posted the lecture slides from last week’s lectures– you’ll find them under the February 3rd and 5th headings on the Schedule and Readings page.

You’ll also find a great break-out paper written by Nathan Butler, which provides an excellent interpretation of some of the passages we read from the wrestling manual in class.

Week 3 lecture and discussion notes added

Salve Omnes,

Last Thursday’s lecture notes and discussion notes on cheating have been added to the site. You’ll find them under the January 22nd heading on the Schedule and Readings page, and the Discussion notes page respectively.

Also, watch this space for what you’ll be watching soon– due to file size limits, we’re figuring out the best way to give you access to some neat videos to watch on gladiators and the modern olympic games!

Paper 1 assignment, audio of breakout 1 now available

Xairete!

We hope you enjoyed the long weekend and are ready to get back into the athletic action this week.  We’ve just uploaded a bunch of new material that you’ll want to look at:

  • Audio files of last week’s breakout session— if you missed it, or if you want to relive the experience! There are .wma .m4a, and .mp3 files available.  Just right click on the file you wish to download and choose “download” or “save file.” Notes from the breakout session are also available under the class heading January 15th on the “Schedule & Readings” tab.
  • Lecture slides from last Thursday’s lecture are also available on the “Schedule & Readings” tab under January 15th.
  • We’ve created a new tab on the main menu for Discussions– we’ll be posting summary notes of what all of you said and asked in class!

Feel free to contact any one of us if you have any questions.
