James Henderson Collins II
Assistant Professor of Classics
University of Southern California
James Collins is an assistant professor at the University of Southern California. His research includes ancient philosophy, Greek literature and cultural history, and his dissertation was entitled, "Philosophical Advertisements: Protreptic Marketing in Fourth-century Greek Culture" (advised by Andrea Nightingale, Richard P. Martin, and Josiah Ober). He has helped to develop a new course titled “Performing Wisdom,” which examines how philosophical theory and practice, thoughts and deeds together contribute to the philosophical art of constructing, performing, and becoming the right sort of character. It considers how living a good life is at heart a public performance, entailing particular modes of action, engagement, and self-presentation and stylization. Additionally, in 2010, James taught courses on ancient science and the pragmatics of cultural production.
