Advanced Latin: Tacitus

An entire bulky chapter in the history of ideas carries his name: “Tacitismo.” Tacitus ranks among the most influential authors of Greco-Roman antiquity. We will read in Latin his literary debut, the Agricola, as well as one of his finest books of his major works, Annales IV. Particular attention will be paid to his challenging syntax and style, his debt to Sallust, and his interactions with contemporary authors. Classics majors and minors must take course for a letter grade. May be repeated for credit.
