Monday, February 13, 2012
5:15 – 7:15 PM
Main Quad, Building 110, Room 112
Did people in Roman Anatolia pay attention to the physical traces of the region’s pre-classical civilizations? Who took notice and what did they make of such traces? How did they manipulate these remains and to what end? This talk will explore the role of Bronze and Iron Age material culture in the construction of a shared group consciousness in the cities of Roman Anatolia.
Dr Felipe Rojas is a post-doctoral fellow at the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University. He has conducted fieldwork in Anatolia and the Levant, primarily in the ancient cities of Sardis, Aphrodisias, and Petra. In Petra he co-directs the Petra Roads Project, which is aimed at documenting and studying manipulations of the narrow canyons connecting the Petra city center with the city's agricultural hinterlands. He is currently writing a book analyzing ancient interaction with Bronze Age, Iron Age, and archaic material remains in ancient Anatolia
