Building 110, Room 112
Notoriously, Caesar does not even mention crossing the Rubicon at the beginning of the Civil War. This invites consideration of what was at stake in the development of the "Rubicon myth" from its origins in the history of Asinius Pollio to our own times -- and of the processes of simplification that inevitably attend efforts to extract meaning from historical memory.
Robert Morstein-Marx is Professor of Classics at UC Santa Barbara. He is a specialist in Roman republican history and oratory; his current research focuses on "Julius Caesar and the Roman People”.
