Welcoming Statement

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Chemistry at Stanford. This web site has been prepared to give prospective graduate students an introduction to our Department and to Stanford in general. Feel free to contact any of the faculty members to find out more about their research programs or other aspects of at Stanford. I think you will find that they share my enthusiasm for our Department and for the quality of our research program and teaching.

Our Departmental admissions staff, led by Roger Kuhn, can provide more general information about admissions procedures or the graduate program. They can be contacted at chem.admissions@stanford.edu or by calling (650) 723-1525.

Application Process

Applications are accepted from candidates who intend to pursue the Ph.D. degree; we do not have a Master's degree program. You can submit your application on-line and pay by credit card. The web-based application allows a person to save the entry and return to the application several times to edit before submitting it. The application fee is $105 for U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and international applicants. Applications from women and minority candidates are encouraged.

It is recommended that applicants take the GRE exams in autumn or earlier. There is also a TOEFL requirement for foreign applicants who have not studied in an English speaking country for at least two years. Applicants will be notified of the Department's decision as soon as possible after all supporting materials have been received, and in no instance later than March 15. Applicants receiving offers of admission must notify the Department of their decision to accept or decline the offer by April 15.

Supporting materials (GRE scores from the verbal, quantitative, analytical and advanced chemistry sections of the test, transcripts and three letters of recommendation) must be mailed to the chemistry department by January 3 in order to be considered for the following academic year:
